Area-based conservation to protect 30% of the planet by 2030 should embrace a diverse toolbox (ProtectedAreas, OECMs), social justice, and robust monitoring and review processes to ensure effective and equitable outcomes.

The Conservation Planning Group focuses on spatial solutions to diverse resource management problems, involving the design of conservation areas and applications of a variety of conservation actions. Our goal is to guide management that promotes the persistence and sustainable use of natural resources and that is implemented with local communities and other stakeholders. Participatory cross-cultural scenario planning helps discuss alternative pathways for the Martuwarra Fitzroy River, Kimberley, Western Australia. Participants created four scenarios and assessed potential changes in wellbeing.
Evolving capabilities in environmental data collection, sharing, and processing, are enabling unprecedented use of data from a wide range of sources. Yet data freshness, an important quality dimension associated with the age of data, is a poorly reported aspect of data quality that can lead to additional uncertainty in research findings.

Australia's marine (un)protected areas: government zoning bias has left marine life in peril since 2012 Australia needs to drop the deception that square kilometres say anything meaningful about conservation.
Our recent paper (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2020.108813) is discussed in today's edition of The Conversation, which unfortunately we cannot post here at the moment. A new study led by Ruby Grantham ( ) found that while (collecting organisms like , , and by hand close to shore) is important for in rough weather, it's still difficult/impossible for some families at certain times of the year. The study found the ability of households to glean in rough weather was influenced by the total area and type of shallow habitat close to the community.

How well are we doing in marine conservation planning? Moving fast, but important gaps in geographic coverage, not enough work in threatened areas, little evidence of input from stakeholders! Research advances and gaps in marine planning: towards a global database in systematic conservation planning Over the last three decades, hundreds of systematic conservation planning (SCP) studies were produced, yet we have no reliable way of finding information on SCP methods, trends, and progress.
