Practice sharing- Critical Reflection
Jacqui here sharing some of my thinking about my approaches to project or Inquiry based learning. I am a keen enthusiast for this style of child-led learning. Drawing on the research and advice in the learning frameworks I have been implementing this approach for some time.
As I do often, I started thinking about whether I was genuinely implementing this contemporary teaching practice with fidelity. This critical reflection on my teaching left me with an understanding although I was exploring ideas/ children’s interests and I was drawing on children’s funds of knowledge, I wasn’t really extending children’s learning over time. The learning itself was more of a one-off experience.
I started thinking about ideas and interests that could develop over time. Two projects emerged, one from me- designing a toy for the play school competition and the second emerged from the children’s play and love of bikes- the bike maintenance project. This one emerged from our bikes needing maintenance and the children using loose parts to create a ‘garage’ for ‘fixing’ the bikes with the loose parts on offer outdoors.
I noted these ideas in our program:
- Children’s interest in the emergent curriculum section
- Design a toy in the Planned group experiences
- Critical in the critical reflection section of our program template.

New Practice sharing episode-Slow pedagogy
In this episode we explore the contemporary approach of 'Slow pedagogy' with Susan Franco, Director and Approved Provider of Explore and Develop Lilyfield. We discuss how purposefully slowing down in our pedagogy allows children and adults to just 'be', to explore, investigate and build strong relationships. Susan shares how responding to each child's rhythm results in more self-regulated children and adults and a calmer learning environment as a whole.

Connecting with country and community is an important element of high-quality practice and embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. However, during National Reconciliation Week (NRW), it is especially important to support young children to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements. This year’s theme is ‘All in’ and is a great time to promote the learning happening at your service as part of NRW.
