MENdatory, our mentoring program for young Muslims, is now running in Brisbane through our licensed partner, UMB MENdatory. Their own boys, their own city, the same work.

And at the end of their session, the Brisbane boys a question we ask everywhere. What did you take from today?

A few hands went up. Not because the rest had nothing to say. Some were scared of sounding stupid in front of the boys. Some had genuinely never been asked to look inward in their life.

Which is strange, because our deen is built on it. Tafakkur, Tadabbur, Ta3aqqul. Three different words pointing at the same instruction: stop, look, understand.

If you’re in Brisbane and you’ve got a young man who needs this, UMB MENdatory is where to find us.

Many mothers think that a daughter who has gone quiet has been lost. The truth is more hopeful than that: she has changed, and the map you were using stopped working.

Being understood matters more to a teenage girl than being fixed.

So ask yourself honestly: when she talks, am I listening to solve her or to know her? When did she last tell me something I did not immediately have an opinion about? What would she say I am like to talk to?

At 5 Before 5 Solutions, we remind mothers that the way back to a daughter is almost never a new strategy. It is a different kind of listening, held long enough that she believes it.

Tonight, let her finish one whole sentence before you answer. Just one.

Knowing you’re overthinking has never once stopped the overthinking.

That’s the frustrating part. You can see yourself doing it. Replaying the conversation. Analysing the decision from every angle.

Overthinking runs in a loop. A trigger sets off a thought. The thought brings anxiety. The anxiety demands analysing. The analysing gives a moment of relief. Then the doubt returns, and the loop spins again.

The question that breaks the loop is simple: is this thinking useful? Is there a problem here you can actually do something about?

If yes, take the next small action. Action ends loops.

If no, then every extra lap of analysis is just keeping you anxious. That’s when the skill becomes noticing the thought, labelling it as a thought, and letting it sit there without treating it as an emergency.

Many sisters think a one sided friendship is a friendship that has failed. But the truth is quieter. Sometimes it is a friendship where one person is simply out of capacity.

I have seen sisters walk away from someone who was holding on by a thread, and never know how close it was.

So ask yourself honestly. Is she taking from me, or is she surviving? Can I carry this without drowning? And if I cannot, can I step back gently instead of disappearing?

At 5 Before 5 Solutions, we remind sisters that holding another woman’s worries is a service, and that Allah sees every time you picked up the phone when you had nothing left to give.

Close to twenty people in Lombok. Seven days.

Take a man out of his routine and you find out what the routine was doing for him. For a lot of men the busyness was never the problem. It was the cover.

The tiredness most brothers describe isn’t from doing too much. It’s from never being still long enough to feel the weight they’ve been carrying. Brotherhood, knowledge, and shared experience are the three ingredients, and seven days is genuinely enough.

We have a run of trips next year. Turkiye and Spain, Lombok, Bosnia and Uzbekistan, and Umrah, built for couples, for fathers and sons, and for men working their way out of addiction.

The scenery is a bonus. The room is the point.

Most dads think they have time.

Time to reconnect. Time to apologise. Time to show up later. But later becomes months, then years. And the child they thought was fine is drowning silently.

And it’s not because fathers don’t care. It’s because they underestimate the cost of their absence.

In Islam, a man is a qawwam. A shepherd. A protector of the souls placed under his care. And Allah will ask every father what he did with that trust.

But here’s the hope. If you’re a father struggling right now, it’s not too late. Your child doesn’t need perfection. They need presence. Your time, your softness, your guidance.

At 5 Before 5 Solutions, we work with fathers rebuilding what they thought was gone, and with young men still healing from fathers who didn’t know what we know now.

Many young Muslim women think that struggling with self-esteem is proof of weak faith. The truth is: it is usually the point at which faith has the most to offer them.

I have sat with girls who apologised to me for feeling worthless, as though low self-worth were a sin they had committed. Nobody had ever told them that a struggling heart and a distant heart are two different things.

Where your worth comes from matters more than how you feel about yourself today.

So ask yourself honestly: whose opinion am I actually using to measure myself?

At 5 Before 5 Solutions, we remind young Muslim women that they were created with a purpose, and that purpose was fixed long before anyone had an opinion about them.

Fifty possible careers doesn’t feel like freedom. It feels like fog. And most people respond to the fog by either freezing completely or grabbing whatever course their friends picked.

There’s a better way, and it starts with a rule: don’t choose. Narrow.

Begin with you, not the job list. The things you’re naturally good at. The problems you actually like solving and the environments you work best in.

That turns forty possibilities into five or six realistic pathways.

Then reality-test the shortlist. Speak to people already doing the work. Work experience. Open days.

At Careers Safari, we guide students through exactly this process, from fog to shortlist to first step.

Many sisters think that if their family is hard, they are meant to simply endure it in silence. But the truth is kinder. You can honour your family and still go and build a village.

I have seen sisters with twenty relatives and nobody to call at 9pm on a hard night.

Being a village matters more than having one.

So ask yourself honestly. Who has shown up for me without being asked? Who have I shown up for? And what would it take to make that a habit instead of an accident?

At 5 Before 5 Solutions, we remind sisters that we were created as an ummah, that isolation was never our fitrah, and that the circle you are praying for is usually one conversation away.

Three rooms in Melbourne. Students, staff, parents. It’s the parents’ room I keep coming back to.

We clear the road for our children. We smooth it out, we step in early, and we do it because watching them struggle feels like failing them.

But resilience isn’t something you teach a child. It’s something they build, and they can only build it on something. If nothing hard ever reaches them, there is nothing there to build with.

Your kid doesn’t need a life with no storms. They need to know you’ll be standing there in the middle of one.

At 5 Before 5 Solutions, we help parents build stronger relationships and raise more resilient children. Get in touch to learn more.
