For 25 years, SASSLA has supported South Australian public school and preschool leaders with practical employment and policy advice, legal support and a strong collective voice. The roles of school and preschool leaders have grown more complex over the last 25 years. This is evident in ever-increasing workload demands, particularly around accountability, risk management, parent behaviour, and administrative responsibilities. In 2001, a small group of principals recognised that the education system was changing, and leaders did not have access to the legal and employment related support they needed to be successful and supported in their role. In response to this challenge, SASSLA was formed which has now transformed into a successful and robust organisation with over 540 members. The following qualities highlight SASSLA’s philosophy in how we support and protect school and preschool leaders:

Empowerment - Members’ trust SASSLA to protect their employment rights and professional reputations. Knowing that expert guidance and support is quickly available provides leaders with confidence in their decision making. Collaboration - SASSLA is a professional Association for leaders with an ethos of collaboration. Our focus is on proactive engagement with all education stakeholders and creating value for our public education system. Choice - School and Preschool Leaders have a choice who represents their employment and professional interests. SASSLA has a proven track record of obtaining results for leaders through our tailored service offerings to members. We are independent of the Government and political parties and represent your interests with an uncompromised voice.

We are excited to release our new branding to members today! We have been working behind the scenes to develop a new branding and marketing strategy to strengthen our visual identity and drive membership growth into the future.

We congratulate Whyalla Secondary College on being named a finalist in the Excellence in Collaborative Partnerships category of the 2026 Public Education Awards 👏👏👏

SASSLA was proud to work with Trish Richman, Christina Nicholas and the LET team to design the SSO to teacher pathway initiative. This small scale initiative has achieved outstanding results and demonstrates what can be accomplished through genuine collaboration with regional partners.

With appropriate investment and evaluation, this model has the potential to be expanded into a statewide initiative, creating new pathways into teaching that attracts and retains educators in regional communities.

It’s National Primary Education Week!

Leanne and Phil visited Tyson Grinham, Principal of Lockleys North Primary School, to learn more about the school’s approach to teaching and learning.

Tyson shared the school’s Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC) data and explained how its initiatives place student wellbeing at the heart of learning. The school’s impressive WEC results are also reflected in this year’s NAPLAN data.

A highlight was seeing students produce their own podcast! The school’s Spotify channel gives students a fantastic platform to share their voices and connect with the wider community.
