All Western Australian public schools have access to a school psychologist, who support student learning through direct, indirect, and system services.

This is incredibly important for families who might be experiencing financial barriers to accessing timely and affordable assessments for children with suspected learning differences like dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia.

Direct services can include assessment, case formulation, and intervention targeted toward, and with, individual and cohorts of students.

As part of this process, school psychologists will determine when psychological assessment is required for diagnostic purposes whilst school intervention occurs, and either conduct the assessment themselves or refer students to specialised services.

I recommend you put your request in writing to your school so they can formally consider your request for school psychology support.

Kindy photo. Not my first day - was looking for that photo. It was a bewdy, 70's dress, huge bag, my 70's dad rocking his long curly hair and beard and me looking worried. I still get frazzled on the first day back at school. Not much has changed. Still love a 70's dress. Still lug a huge bag. My dad has shaved his beard and cropped his hair.

Nature, creativity and a little bit of chaos. This bird just wandered in and talked a bit to me. My student just found a red tailed cockatoo feather under the desk. Feeling a bit like a woodland Disney Princess.

This praying mantis keeps asking to come in and learn at Ms Calleja's Classroom. Should I let it in?

We were learning the soft g spelling rule, so we drew our own giants.

This is Buddy, our learning helper. He loves it when you read him a book.

Was there a teacher who made a huge difference in your life? One of mine was Mrs Baptist, a teacher librarian. Another was Victoria Carlton.

This afternoon's office. Planning time, admin and daydreaming over lunch.

✨Waldorf and Montessori: What’s the Difference?! ✨

Sometimes I forget how niche we get around here with the Montessori comedy. Not everyone knows the nuances of these two beautiful—but very different—philosophies. Honestly, I had no idea what a Montessori classroom even was until I had my son. Now it’s something that has profoundly changed my life.

That said, one of my biggest pet peeves (and I know many Montessori and Waldorf educators feel this) is how often these two approaches get lumped together. Usually because, let’s be honest, they both use natural materials and create dreamy, beautiful spaces for children. But aesthetically similar ≠ philosophically the same.

I deeply respect both approaches. I even borrow from Waldorf’s sense of whimsy and creativity when designing Montessori works. The thing I love most about Montessori? You can do almost anything—it’s all in the presentation.

Since it’s hard to capture the full depth of both philosophies in one video, I pulled some of the most accurate visuals I could find to tell a cohesive story. If you recognize a photo or classroom, please let me know so I can credit the original creators!

This is a really good explainer about the differences between Steiner and Montessori education.
