The Perth Zoo recently opened a new cafe precinct, playground and function centre, transforming how visitors enjoy a day-trip to the Zoo. One of the fabulous new additions to the expansive playground is a communication board developed in collaboration with the team at Two Way Street.

We love how the team at Perth Zoo have seamlessly blended the communication board with the look and feel of other signage, as well as the inclusion of a site map that can also be part of your chat using the symbols on the board.

Visit our interactive map to download the Perth Zoo communication board before your visit: https://twowaystreet.com.au/playground-boards/

Our Speech Pathologists work closely with playground designers to develop communication boards that will enhance interactions for people enjoying recreational spaces. Reach out to Two Way Street for a chat about adding a communication board to your space.

FREE MICROBOARDS FOR CHILDREN INFORMATION SESSION and an opportunity for your family to receive free support from Microboards Australia for 12 months. Enrol here: https://podio.com/webforms/28261250/2240554

In 2020 Microboards Australia received an ILC grant to explore the value of Microboards principles during childhood.
Some ways our principles were embedded included :
Vision and planning during childhood which allows families to lay down the foundation of a safe and self-determined life in adulthood
Person-centred thinking which supports the child and those in their network to know them well, and to base supports and plans on their unique personhood
Self-determination and ways to safely increase the choices and control children have in their lives as they mature
Relationships, friendships and supporting lasting social networks
We ran a pilot program with 11 families over 18 months which was evaluated by Deakin University and found to have positive outcomes for families, including:
The learning and insight gained from other families
Greater confidence and ability to advocate for their child
Tools and strategies to communicate with and alongside their child to support planning and supported decision making.
Improved self-image of their child
Increased levels of self-determination for their child
For some families, progress towards forming a Microboard
Microboards Australia have been re-funded to run the Microboards for Children program again in 2023 and are welcoming new families who may be interested in participating.
We will be holding an Information Session about Microboards and how they can have relevance to children on Monday 27 February which is open to everyone. People who register but cannot attend will have access to a recording.
Interested attendees will be invited to submit an expression of interest in joining the Microboards for Children program which will run from March 2023 – May 2024.
The key focus of the 2023 program will be on Microboards principles and particularly how to support a range of relationships including friendships with peers, which is the cornerstone of supporting a self determined life and positive wellbeing for most. The pilot program found that support to facilitate relationships and friendships was a priority for both families and their children and also the area where families struggled the most.
There is no cost to be a family participant in the program. Families with children under the age of 18 are invited to join.
Families interested in participating need to be able to engage in the project for 4 – 6 hours a month during that time.
Families do not need to be committed to forming a Microboard as this program focusses on the foundations of Microboards rather than forming them, although some families may work towards a Microboard with our support as part of the project if they wish.
If you wish to attend this information session, click into the flyer below. Feel free to share this with others who might be interested.

Was so lovely to see your little friend Luca at rehabME.
As a team now all located in 1 place we were able to schedule his PT, SPT and OT back to back to harness collaboration, reduce travel time and foster efficiency.
What a lovely afternoon of work and play! Go Luca!

What a delightful first session in our new clinic space at the rehabME centre! Chloe was a chatterbox sharing how her 'buddy' sister 'Gracie' is like a 'bird' when she plays her flute. We can't wait to see Chloe receive her new Tobii Dynavox i13 from Link Assistive in the next week or so - her access on this device is even better and she has so much to say!
