NAPLAN writing practice at home needs three things: a blank page, a picture, and 25 minutes on a timer.

Here is why 25. The ASET writing task — the writing section of the GATE exam in WA — gives Year 6 students one stimulus and 25 minutes to write a response. NAPLAN gives 40 minutes in Year 3 and 42 in Years 5, 7 and 9, and works the same way: one prompt, one response, no second draft.

Both tests reward one skill, and it is not spelling and not handwriting. It is planning fast and then writing without stopping. Almost nobody practises that at home, because at home there is no clock.

Once a week is enough. Kitchen table, timer on, phone in another room. Then read it back together and ask one question: what job is this paragraph doing for the reader.
