🎬 Burrendah P&C Family Movie Night – Thursday 6 August

Looking for a fun family night out? Join us for the Burrendah P&C Movie Night on Thursday 6 August!

Bring your blankets, chairs and pillows and enjoy an evening under the stars with our Burrendah school community as we watch GOAT on the big screen.

Event Details

• Gates open: 5:00 pm
• Movie starts: 6:00 pm sharp
• Burrendah Primary School Undercover Area (entry via Castlereagh)

The canteen will be open throughout the evening selling hot food, drinks and snacks.

Information for parents - When is it OK to miss school?

It is important for children to attend school all day, every day.
When is it OK to not go to school?

An OK reason is one that prevents your child from getting to school. This could include:

• your child is unable to attend because they are sick
• attending cultural or religious observances such as sorry time and funerals
• an unavoidable medical appointment
• an unavoidable natural event such as flood waters or a cyclone

The Principal decides if the reason given for your child’s absence is acceptable. The Principal may ask you for more information so they can determine if your absence request is reasonable or unreasonable according to the WA Department of Education Policy.

It’s NOT OK to miss school if your child:

• is celebrating a birthday
• is going on a family holiday
• is visiting family and friends
• has slept in or had a big weekend
• is looking after other children
• has sport or other recreational activities that have not been approved by the school
• has appointment such as haircuts and minor check ups

If possible, routine medical and other health appointments should be made either before or after school, or during the school holidays.

Do you need to let the school know if your child will be away from school?

Yes, you need to let the school know the reason why your child is going to be, or has been, absent from school as soon as possible.

Where possible, please discuss any upcoming absences in advance so we can let you know of important learning or activities your child will miss out on.

This requires a responsible person, usually a parent, to provide a reason for the absence within three school days.

Having information about why your child is missing school helps us plan for their return to school and work out whether we can provide any further help to you.

Why is going to school so important?

• At school, many concepts such as literacy and numeracy are taught in a sequence. Missing school means missing out on learning – which can often make it difficult to catch up later. This is particularly important in the early years when essential foundation skills are being taught.
• Going to school every day helps children learn the important life skill of ‘showing up’ – at school, at work, to sport and other commitments.

We are very excited to announce Mr Luke Erceg will be joining our school in Semester 2 as a Deputy Principal.

Mr Erceg has shared a little bit of information about himself to introduce himself to our community (see below).

Mr Erceg is absolutely delighted to be joining the Burrendah Primary School community. He has already heard so many wonderful things about the students and families here, and is very excited to become a part of such a vibrant school.

While completing his Bachelor of Education (Primary), he also completed an internship with the Western Australian School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), contributing to the Judging Standards Project, before completing his degree and moving into classroom teaching.

Over the past twelve years, he has worked in a range of roles, most recently as a Teaching and Learning Leader, where he led curriculum, instructional coaching, and effective assessment practices. He is passionate about using research-informed strategies and uses his strong understanding of child development to help every student achieve their best.

He believes that with high expectations and the right support, all students can achieve amazing things. He values working closely with staff, families, and the wider school community to create a positive environment where every child feels valued and is supported to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

If you venture north of the river, you might see Mr Erceg walking Atlas and Sophie, his two Italian greyhounds, or queueing to see the latest Marvel Comics blockbuster at the movies.

He wishes you all a wonderful and restful break, and is very much look forward to meeting you and your children next term.

Don’t forget our school is closed tomorrow for parent / teacher interviews. Students do not attend on this day and no supervision will be provided.

A reminder our school will be closed on Wednesday 24 June 2026 for Parent Teacher Interviews. Students do not attend on this day.

A full day closure for Parent Teacher Interviews is a new state initiative introduced by the Department of Education, WA.

Changes to the school day will provide more time for teachers to meet with parents for the purpose of reporting during normal school hours.

Schools can now plan for a maximum of two reporting to parents sessions each year with a full day close.

In consultation with our School Board, Burrendah Primary School has extended its usual half day closure to a full day closure to meet the new requirements.

We will consult with our staff and community to determine whether a second full day closure later in the year would be beneficial for the purposes of scheduling a second opportunity to formally meet with the teacher to discuss your child's progress.
