Sword-WA is a Study group for Classical Japanese Martial Arts - Nihon KOBUDO Katori Shinto Ryu So this is quite an elite level martial tradition.

This group is about people learning about themselves through Zen Buddhism and traditional Japanese Martial Art (Kobudo). You will do a short period of Zen meditation and then train in learning a 400year old system of Japanese weapons and defence. The training is held twice a week, individual instruction is available on inquiry. However we only accept people looking to dedicate themselves for an ar

Aishinkan Kobudo Kenkyukai (Harmonious Mind Old Martial Way Study Group) demonstrated at Perth Japanese Festival 2026.
The group trains at the Temple (Jizo-an Rinzai Zen Temple) every weekend between 6.45am and 11am practicing Katori shinto ryu Kobujutsu an 800 year old tradition of Japanese Swordsmanship. It's main skill set is Iaijutsu, but the tradition is considered Sogo budo, 'many weapons', including long and short swords, spear, staff, jujutsu and others.

Demonstration at 2026 Perth Japanese Festival in Langley Park

We demonstrated at the 2026 Perth Japanese Festival (matsuri) the group's head teacher Mujyo Osho demonstrated Iai, and then Kenjutsu, Bojutsu, Naginatajutsu, Sojutsu with Steve Richards, and Ru Kinsman, while Mariko Kanada narrated as usual.

We would like to see the Budo component of the Festival grow, currently the Budo demonstrations are opened by WA Kyudo, UWA Judo, WA Kendo also takes part annually. This year Curtin University Shorinji kempo, and Kyokushinkai Karate Western Australia also took part.

We would like to see more inclusion at the matsuri. Many cultural groups in Australia also contain Australians and sometimes are lead by Australians. They should be recognised too, and respected for their efforts. We feel the Festival should be for everyone. We also feel the Budo demonstration should not feel like it is tacked on as an afterthought to the main matsuri. Safety at the matsuri has improved but we still feel concerned about inclusion. We feel there should be a Budo sub-comittee.
