Gee, if only there was somewhere in the western suburbs where they could put a new high school…..or re open an old one.
Perth’s golden triangle public schools under pressure as families flood the area
Shenton College will receive a $15 million expansion to help manage skyrocketing enrolment numbers across the western suburbs, but industry experts say this is a temporary fix to a long-term problem.

This is an interesting opinion piece about Perth public high schools. Thank you to Emma Young at WAtoday.com.au for raising the issues.

What the ‘flight to private’ is doing to Perth schools, and those left behind
Why are relatively privileged inner suburbanites happy to put up with substandard public education and lack of return on taxes, instead paying through the nose?

The latest school enrolment numbers for Bob Hawke College. They are almost at 1000 in their third year, and they don't have Upper Secondary, yet.

This is a great article by the ABC about how Bob Hawke College won't solve the high school overcrowding. Read it and share it to raise awareness!
A piece of prime real estate could solve Perth's school squeeze — if it isn't sold off first
The new Bob Hawke College is set to instantly reach capacity by the time it's fully up and running, so the WA Government is being urged to hold onto a parcel of land which could solve school overcrowding in the western suburbs.

Student numbers for Balcatta Senior High School. This is quite a small school, but in the last two years it has been increasing.

The Department of Education has released the 2021 student numbers, so we will post these over the next few weeks. Here are the student numbers for Shenton College, as you can see they are rising steadily over the the last 5 years, despite Bob Hawke Collage being opened in 2020. We Need A High School

We've done a review of the 14 public primary school student enrollments which are within the Shenton College local intake area (as at 2020 Semester 2, as they haven't released 2021 student numbers). There are a lot of schools in the catchment, and a total of 6,859 public primary school students. We Need A High School now!

We put these questions to Christine Tonkin (local Labor member): We are concerned about the future of the City Beach international school site. Can we have an update on the Labor Party's plan for the overcrowding issues for Churchlands Senior High School and the future of City Beach international school site? Does the Labor Party plan to put an additional high school on the City Beach site? If the City Beach site is sold off for housing there would be a huge protest from the community.
And this was her response:
I am very much aware of the pressures on Churchlands SHS. We have recently announced that $3.5M has been committed by a re elected McGowan Government to build two new STEM classrooms at Churchlands. I know that this does not address the larger problem but it will help the school community.
The objective of your group to promote the need for a new high school is laudable. However, the dilemma is that the population growth in the electorate is in the eastern inner city suburbs. This is where much of the infill has occurred rather than in the City Beach/ Floreat areas which have strongly resisted any higher density development. It is therefore questionable that the City Beach International School site is the right place for a new High School.
Before you draw any conclusions about what might happen to the City Beach International School site if it is not needed for a new high school, I know of no plans for the site. As the Government is in caretaker mode, I cannot even make inquiries.
What I can say, is that if I am elected as the Member for Churchlands, I will be a strong advocate for improving the quality of education at the public schools in the electorate including at Churchlands Senior High School.

Sean L'Estrange has made a commitment to safeguard City Beach High School SIte for the future - Great work Liberal Party. We are also asking the Labor Party for the same commitment.
Student growth continues in the Western Suburbs, yet the Labor Government is choosing to ignore one of the smartest options to deal with future population pressure. I will continue to fight for the City Beach high school site to be preserved for education use.
