Our homes should be a safe place that fosters physical and emotional connections with our kids.

Rebekah Nijsen: Discord, Not All Fun & Games - Mornings with Doug 22/04/2026

Discord can be a great platform for creating communities online, but for our kids is it all just fun and games?
Listen below for the chat I had with Doug on Sonshine (98five) last term.

Rebekah Nijsen: Discord, Not All Fun & Games - Mornings with Doug "Discord is described on the app as, ‘Group chat that’s all fun and games’. Yet as a Police Detective for over 16 years, I can assure you it’s far from that." - Rebekah Nijsen (Lighthouse Cyber Education)

Last week I headed down to South Coast Baptist College to speak with Year 8 and 9 students. We explored why teens share intimate images online and the importance of speaking up and seeking help not just for ourselves but others too.

I genuinely feel so honoured to sit with teens and hear their own perspectives and opinions.

Thank you to the school community for making space to have these important conversations.

This year I am excited to partner with schools through a Digital Literacy Program. Each term we focus on a particular topic, and this term we are exploring artificial intelligence. With AI becoming increasingly present in our daily lives, it's important for students to understand how it shapes the information they encounter online. That not everything we see online is real, true or safe.
Last week I had the privilege to partner with Leeming Primary School P&C and run workshops for both students and parents.

If you think this Digital Literacy Program would benefit your school community please reach out, I would love to have a chat.

As we expose the dark cultures lurking online we can begin to understand just how to protect our kids. Below is a recent chat I had with Doug on Sonshine (98five).

Rebekah Nijsen from Lighthouse Cyber Education joined Doug on Mornings with Doug to discuss what every parent needs to know about the extremist cult, 764. A little warning: this may be a hard read, but it’s an important one for parents.

This week I headed to Queen of Apostles School Riverton to speak with the year 5 and 6 students. We talked about gaming and what unsafe signs to look out for. We discussed group chats and understanding how our own behaviour can influence the culture online and in the classroom. Thank you for having me and sharing honestly in the session.

Kids crave connection and increasingly are seeking this connection online.

That's why we need to have regular and open chats about digital safety with all our kids, no matter their age.

Who is 764 and what every parent needs to know.

Warning! This blog contains reference to su***de, self-harm and child sexual abuse material.

Let me start by saying that this is a confronting read.

Yet I believe it is necessary for all parents to know just what evil is active and targeting our kids online.

764 is a child sextortion cult operating online that groom’s minors to perform self-harm, animal cruelty, produce child exploitation material and even su***de. They target vulnerable kids seeking validation and connection through popular game platforms Roblox and Minecraft.

The most disturbing part is that kids are preying on other kids.

See below link to find out more and identify the signs.

Back to it at Rostrata Primary School yesterday. With the older kids we explored, what is kindness and some reasons why kids exclude others online in group chats or in online gaming. Students discovered their shared responsibility in fostering an inclusive, safe and respectable online space. Thank you for having me!
