Saying Goodbye to a Quiet Piece of Rockhampton History.

In the peaceful surrounds of Church Park, Glenmore Road, stands a modest timber building that has quietly witnessed more than a century of Rockhampton's growth.

This building – originally the Glenmore Schoolhouse, built in 1889 – has served many purposes over its 136-year lifespan. From its early days near Smith’s Gully, McLaughlin St, surviving the great flood of 1918, to its relocation in 1922 to Hinchcliff Street, where is was still used to educate Rockhampton's previous generations, and again in the early 1970's for the Park Avenue CWA in what was then known as Five Star Park — it has remained a constant thread through generations of community life.

Constructed from local timber sourced from the base of the Berserker Range, the building is a symbol of resilience and regional craftsmanship.

Recently, it was announced that the building will be removed due to safety and functionality concerns. Following thorough assessments, the Rockhampton Regional Council concluded that the cost of remedial works outweighed its current usability.

The CQ Detectorists Metal Detecting Club had hoped to intervene to preserve the structure, but unfortunately came into the picture after key decisions had been made. While the building is still standing, the window for preservation has passed.

Although it won’t remain in the landscape, its story and significance are not forgotten.

We invite the community to share their memories, photos, or stories connected to this building — as a way of celebrating its long life and place in Rockhampton's history.

Let’s honour the past — even as the landscape continues to change.
