The Waste and Recycling Industry Association of WA (WRIWA) is launching its Election Priorities for the Waste and Recycling Sector. Over the next eight business days, we will delve into what our industry believes an incoming government should prioritize in the next term of office.
WRIWA, an industry-only body, advocates for strong policy guidelines to align with the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 and address key issues in the sector:
- **Lithium-Ion Battery Fires:** Calling for a mandatory battery collection system, including embedded batteries, to safeguard lives.
- **Landfill Levy:** Urging a review and comprehensive dialogue between government and industry for effective management.
- **Recovered Materials Framework:** Commending the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) for their efforts and calling for continued support.
- **Commercial and Industrial Recycling:** Seeking enhanced backing for the Container Deposit Scheme and mandatory commercial food waste recycling.
- **Review of the Common User Arrangement (CUA):** Advocating for alignment with the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030.
- **Ban on the Burial of Tyres:** Proposing legislation to prohibit burying all tyres and increase the use of crumbed rubber in roads.
- **Household Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO):** Pushing for the full implementation of the MRA Consulting report recommendations.
- **Solar Panel and Electric Vehicle Components Recycling:** Urging state policy development to address this critical issue.
- **Oil and Gas Decommissioning Project:** Supporting the growth of a new industry in WA.
- **License Amendment and Application Approval Timelines:** Calling for discussions to streamline approval processes and reduce industry burdens.
Building on past successes, including leading initiatives in Energy Recovery and Material Recovery Facilities, WRIWA emphasizes the need for stable policies and funding to drive innovation and growth in the waste and recycling sector. We stand ready to collaborate with the new state government to bolster our economy.
