Long ago, the Bodhisatta was born as a wise and kind king. One day, while travelling through a forest, he came across two parrots who looked exactly alike.
The two parrots were brothers, but they had grown up in very different places.
One parrot had been raised by good and peaceful people. He learned to speak kindly, welcome visitors, and treat everyone with respect.
The other parrot had been taken away from his family and ended up living with a group of robbers. From them, he learned rude and violent words.
One day, the king was travelling through the forest when he heard someone shouting.
โ€œStop him! Catch him! Take his things!โ€
The king was surprised by the harsh words. Looking up, he saw a parrot sitting in a tree. The parrot had learned these words from the robbers who had raised him.
Later, the king travelled to another part of the forest. There, he heard a gentle voice saying:
โ€œWelcome, traveller! Please come and rest. You are safe here.โ€
The king looked up and saw another parrot. It was the brother of the first parrot.
The king realised something important: although the two parrots were brothers, the people around them had shaped the way they behaved.
The kind parrot had learned kindness because he lived with good people. The other parrot had learned cruel words because he lived with criminals.
The king then taught everyone:
โ€œA personโ€™s character is greatly influenced by the company they keep.โ€
From that day on, the people remembered to choose their friends carefully and to spend time with those who encouraged good thoughts and actions.
Moral
The company we keep can influence who we become. Therefore, we should choose good friends and follow good examples.

A Little Throwback to Poson Poya Day

Back in June, our Dhamma School children had the beautiful opportunity to take part in Dawal Dฤna, offering lunch to devotees observing Sil on this sacred Poson Poya Day. ๐Ÿ™

It was a wonderful opportunity for our children to practise generosity, kindness, compassion and respect, values we hope they will carry in their hearts every day.

Dฤna means generosity and selfless giving. It teaches us to give with a kind and open heart, without expecting anything in return. Through this beautiful practice, we hope to help our children understand the joy of sharing, caring and giving to others.

May you be protected by the Triple Gem ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿชท ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Beginning Our Dhamma School Day with Devotion and Mindfulness ๐ŸŒผ

Each Dhamma School day begins with a beautiful moment of respect, gratitude, and mindfulness. Before lessons begin, our students come together to offer flowers and gilanpasa to the Buddha, recite gฤthฤ, and spend a few quiet moments in meditation.

These simple acts of devotion help our children connect with the Buddhaโ€™s teachings and understand that the Dhamma is not only something we learnโ€”it is something we practise through our thoughts, words, and actions.

Through offering flowers, our students learn gratitude and reflect on the Buddhaโ€™s teaching of impermanence. Through offering gilanpasa, they experience the happiness of generosity and the joy of giving with a sincere heart. Through chanting and meditation, they develop mindfulness, calmness, and a deeper connection with the Triple Gem.

At our Dhamma School, we hope to nurture children with the Buddhaโ€™s teachings of kindness, compassion, patience, wisdom, and self-discipline. Our aim is for children to carry these values beyond the classroom and allow the Dhamma to guide their daily lives.

As the Buddha taught:

โ€œJust as a solid rock is not shaken by the wind, so the wise are not shaken by praise or blame.โ€
โ€” Dhammapada 81

May our children grow with strong and peaceful minds, learning to face life with wisdom, compassion, and resilience. May the Dhamma they learn today become a guiding light throughout their journey.

๐Ÿ™ Vassana Kalaya & Katina Pinkama ๐Ÿ™

With the Esala Full Moon Poya, Buddhists begin the sacred Vassana Kalaya (Rainy Retreat)โ€”a three-month period during which the Maha Sangha remain in one place, following the example set by the Lord Buddha.

This is a special opportunity for all Buddhists to deepen their spiritual practice by cultivating เถฏเทเถฑ (Generosity), เทƒเท“เถฝ (Virtue), and เถทเทเท€เถฑเท (Meditation), listening to the Dhamma, and supporting the Maha Sangha.

The Vassana season concludes with the Katina Pinkama, one of the most significant and meritorious ceremonies in Theravฤda Buddhism, where devotees respectfully offer the Katina Cheevara (robe) to the Maha Sangha.

May this Vassana season inspire us to strengthen our faith, practise the Dhamma, and walk the Noble Path with compassion and wisdom.

๐Ÿ™ May the blessings of the Noble Triple Gem be with you all. ๐Ÿ™

As we begin a new school term, we'd like to look back on one of the highlights of this year, our Vesak Celebration at Perth Sri Lanka Buddhist Vihara.
Our Dhamma School students proudly participated in the Vesak Perahera, followed by a beautiful Bhakthi Gee performance presented by our students, together with our dedicated teachers and parents.
A heartfelt thank you to all the students, parents, teachers, volunteers, and everyone who contributed to making this event so special.
