Long ago, the Bodhisatta was born as a wise and kind king. One day, while travelling through a forest, he came across two parrots who looked exactly alike.
The two parrots were brothers, but they had grown up in very different places.
One parrot had been raised by good and peaceful people. He learned to speak kindly, welcome visitors, and treat everyone with respect.
The other parrot had been taken away from his family and ended up living with a group of robbers. From them, he learned rude and violent words.
One day, the king was travelling through the forest when he heard someone shouting.
โStop him! Catch him! Take his things!โ
The king was surprised by the harsh words. Looking up, he saw a parrot sitting in a tree. The parrot had learned these words from the robbers who had raised him.
Later, the king travelled to another part of the forest. There, he heard a gentle voice saying:
โWelcome, traveller! Please come and rest. You are safe here.โ
The king looked up and saw another parrot. It was the brother of the first parrot.
The king realised something important: although the two parrots were brothers, the people around them had shaped the way they behaved.
The kind parrot had learned kindness because he lived with good people. The other parrot had learned cruel words because he lived with criminals.
The king then taught everyone:
โA personโs character is greatly influenced by the company they keep.โ
From that day on, the people remembered to choose their friends carefully and to spend time with those who encouraged good thoughts and actions.
Moral
The company we keep can influence who we become. Therefore, we should choose good friends and follow good examples.
