The Chief Minister of Sarawak has been confirmed as the Patron of WorldSTE and STEMfest 2013, Abdul Taib Mahmud will be launching the event on Monday 30th September 2013 www.stemstates.org

WorldSTE is more than just a conference in 2013, it was invited to Malaysia to make a difference. As Malaysia strives towards becoming a developed nation by 2020 we need to ensure that we have strong science educators. When we set out to host WorldSTE and STEMfest we set out to have tangible benefits to the local communities, with just 4 weeks until the event here are some areas of interest: 100 Sarawak teachers will attend to learn about safety in science and will be required to return to their schools to implement safety plans, 100 teachers will attend to learn about transnational collaboration and look at ways their school can engage with schools around the world to develop joint science education programs, and 100 teachers will attend a peripheral conference (Hybrid Technologies) to assist in learning more about renewable energy and the development of stand alone electricity generation, they will then go away an implement this across 100 remote and rural communities. This is just some of the practical outcomes we aim to achieve at World STE and STEMfest, so that the conference become more than just discussions, it helps to develop and encourage the community about the benefits of science education. In addition, Sarawak promises to be an enjoyable and fun experience, as learning should be!

Hosting WorldSTE in Malaysia is about us training up local teachers and inspiring more young people to continue into science education at a higher level. As part of our strategy to do this we have WorldSTE as the core conference but have expanded to make it part of a larger citywide festival of science, we can STEMfest. Whilst the WorldSTE conference is taking place we have a wide range of city wide activities taking place under this festival atmosphere, from photo competitions to public open days at the planetarium, from visiting speakers going to talk at schools to inviting school groups to witness some of the events taking place such as the launch. Whilst WorldSTE will be e core conference, we will also have another 6 specialist meetings and conferences taking place across UNIMAS as well as an exhibition of 60 booths. Here is a sample of what to expect.

Seeking interested delegates who are attending the WorldSTE conference at the end of September 2013 in Malaysia to be judges. The process will be to review a group of 140 student posters that will be displayed on level 2 and 3 of the convention centre, prizes will be awarded to students for the most professional posters. We need a group of 10 science educators from the WorldSTE delegates. Please let me know if you are interested!
