Once upon a time you were measured primarily by your IQ.
Research now shows that EQ and SQ are much more important in measuring your success in life. Also factored in now is your AQ (adversity quotient) aligned to resilience and coping.
So remember when judging yourself or your kids on test scores- they are only a small factor predicting success!

This could be how you’re feeling right now, knowing you want to make changes but not sure you’re qualified enough, experienced enough, just not ready… enough.
The reason I know this is because this was me. With a very long checklist I needed to tick off before I was ready… more qualifications, the ‘right’ time, waiting for the green light to go! Once I understood I had the switch in my hand I did what I want you to do - I flicked the switch took a deep breath and it feels good!

For over 20 years I have been mentoring and advising students on courses and career choices. This was something I did outside of my day job because I loved working with people and unlocking their potential. I thought it was time to take my own career advice and start doing what I love.

I have predominately worked in the vocational and university sector, on metropolitan and regional campuses and often working with different industries on their workforce needs -for now and into the future.

And what I found over those years were parents and kids confused and often very stressed by the system. I also found adults who had started down one career path but had no idea how to switch out and over into what they really wanted to do. What I knew from my experience in the sector was there are many paths into courses and careers that often aren’t explored.

I have had many year 12's distressed when they receive their ATAR score and have missed the cut off for their university or TAFE choice (end of the world but it’s not) and we have navigated another pathway because there is always another way. Or the guy who finished year 10 and became a labourer but really wanted to be a Landscape Architect - he got into university through alternate pathways and is now qualified in his own business. Or the young woman who was home recovering from substance abuse and came to see me at the TAFE to do a business certificate - 6 months later she was enrolled into a Social Work degree - now a committed social worker.
It’s not as straightforward as it used to be where you had one qualification - for one job - for life.

In the future you will change your job on average every 5 years and flexibility and agility are key. I love the challenge of finding the best courses and qualifications but also understanding the value of the transferable skills you have gathered on the way through jobs.

The term 'jobs of the future' is bandied around a lot now and often the courses and qualifications still on offer at TAFE's and Uni's don’t match the skills that will be needed in these new sectors. Having a strong overview of both vocational, university and post trades I can help customise the courses to match the job or the job to match the course.
