Zi ping Zhen Quan 子平真詮 Chapter 2 (1)

四時之運，相生而成,
The four seasons rotates in a productive cycle
故木生火，火生土，土生金，金生水，水復生木，
Therefore, Wood produce Fire, Fire produce Earth, Earth produce Metal, Metal produce water, and water produces Wood.
即相生之序，循環迭運，而時行不匱。
This productive cycle is without compromise and is incessant.
然而有生又必有克，
Since there is a productive cycle, there will also be a clash cycle.
生而不克，
Without the clash cycle,
則四時亦不成矣。
the four seasons cannot form.
克者，所以節而止之，
Because of the clash, Qi retreats and stop,
使之收斂，以為發泄之機，
Qi then starts to accumulate and waits to be released
故曰“天地節而四時成”。
Thus this process forms the four seasons.
