What a beautiful week of play, imagination and discovery at Today’s Child 💛

This week the children explored transport play, mini shops, puzzles, lock boxes, interactive boards, jumping challenges, soccer, imaginative doll play and so much more.

There were lots of opportunities for problem-solving, creativity, movement, teamwork and connection as the children confidently led their own play and learning throughout the week

What a fun and engaging week we’ve had

From tee ball, soccer, tunnels and trucks, to creative sandpit play and interactive boards — the children spent the week exploring, imagining, creating, and moving with joy.

We loved seeing children problem solve with PVC pipes and cars, discover sunny spaces for colourful blocks, and work together during active play.

There were also beautiful quieter moments with books, felt stories, sensory exploration, and even watching a cricket climb.

So many simple moments that support big learning, growing confidence, friendships, and connection ✨

Family Day Care is often misunderstood, but it is such a special, intentional and regulated part of early childhood education. It may look different from centre-based care, but different does not mean less. Smaller groups, strong relationships and individualised learning are some of the things that make Family Day Care so valuable.

What a beautiful week of curiosity, imagination and play

The children have loved exploring our new sandpit and sink, creating their own tea parties, transporting materials, and bringing their ideas to life through play.

We’ve had some lovely “wow” moments too — especially noticing our mushrooms growing and watching how things change in our environment.

There’s been lots of problem-solving, movement, and creativity, with children building, balancing, exploring, and revisiting their favourite play again and again.

It’s always so special watching their ideas grow, their confidence build, and their connections with each other deepen

I could not think of a better profession.

We’ve spent the weekend giving our outdoor space a little refresh, and the children were very excited to discover a bigger sandpit waiting for them today.

With more room to move, dig, build, transport, imagine and explore, the sandpit quickly became a busy place of teamwork, problem-solving and creative play.

We’ve added loose parts, natural materials, trucks, tools, little treasures, and even our kitchen sink within easy reach so the children can follow their own ideas and bring their play to life.

It’s always so special watching a space evolve in response to how the children play, explore and connect. Sometimes a simple change in the environment opens the door to so much learning.

🌿 This Week at Today’s Child 🌿

What a beautiful week of curiosity, imagination and play ✨

From building cubbies and planes, to exploring sand, pipes and tunnels — our little learners were busy thinking, creating and problem-solving every day.

We saw so much connection too… sharing, turn taking, caring for each other, and working together during play and pack away.

There were moments of big movement and laughter, balanced with quiet play, reading and independent exploration.

It’s always so special watching children follow their ideas, make discoveries, and grow in confidence 💛

🌿 This Week at Today’s Child 🌿
This week has been filled with investigation, imagination, and following the children’s ideas as learning unfolded naturally through play.
Children’s voices guided many of our experiences, from deciding where and how to build cubbies to choosing how they wanted to explore their environment. This led to rich, collaborative play, with problem-solving emerging as children worked together to construct, rebuild, and adapt their ideas.
Outdoor play was a strong focus, with the sandpit, deck, and open spaces providing opportunities for transporting, filling, pouring, and experimenting with materials such as pipes, water, and chalk. Children explored cause and effect as they investigated colour changes, movement, and how materials behaved in different environments.
Imaginative play flowed throughout the week, with cubby houses, bear hunts, puppies, and caring for “Bone Man” becoming meaningful storylines. Children drew on their own experiences, bringing familiar ideas such as home routines, animals, and helping others into their play.
There was also a beautiful balance of calm and creative experiences. Mark making, scented playdough, books on blankets, and quiet outdoor setups supported moments of focus, creativity, and relaxation.
Nature continued to spark curiosity, with children noticing the smell of rain, discovering insects, and observing changes in their environment, leading to conversations and shared learning.
Overall, the week reflected confident, capable learners — curious, imaginative, and deeply engaged, building knowledge through exploration, connection, and play.

There is something truly powerful about stepping back… and simply letting toddlers be.

Not directing.
Not correcting.
Not jumping in to show them “the right way.”

Just watching… as they explore, discover, and make sense of the world in their own time.

Because play is their work.

When toddlers are given the space to play freely, they are:
✨ Building confidence
✨ Developing problem-solving skills
✨ Learning how their bodies move
✨ Exploring creativity and imagination
✨ Making their own choices

What might look like “just play” is actually deep, meaningful learning.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do as adults is pause and trust the process.

To sit nearby.
To observe.
To be present without taking over.

Because in those quiet moments of uninterrupted play…
they are becoming capable, curious, and confident little humans.

Let them be little.
Let them lead.
Let them play

This weekend I had the honour of attending a beautiful High Tea with the Eastern Region Family Day Care team to celebrate educators and their years of service.
I feel incredibly grateful to have been recognised for 10 years of continuous service.
Over the past decade I have had the privilege of caring for and learning alongside so many wonderful children and families. Watching little people grow in confidence, curiosity and kindness is truly one of the greatest gifts of this work.
Family Day Care is so much more than a job for me. It is about creating a space where children feel safe, valued and supported to be themselves while they explore, play and learn about the world.
Thank you to the families who trust me with their children, and to the Eastern Region Family Day Care team for the ongoing support and recognition. I feel very lucky to be part of such a passionate community of educators.
Here’s to many more years of nurturing little hearts and minds 💛
