Geoscience Pathways Project

Geoscience Pathways Project The Geoscience Pathways Project is a not-for profit inc body of like-minded science teachers, supported by professional associations.

The Geoscience Pathways Project is a not-for profit incorporated body of like-minded science teachers, supported by professional associations and university academics. Our work is best understood by visiting our website: www.geosciencepathways.org.au. Our aim is to foster and encourage SA students to continue their studies in science beyond the compulsory units in years 7-10 and to elect to study

senior secondary science, particularly through the uptake of the emerging SACE EES when these courses are launched in 2017 and 2018. Our activities are currently sponsored to a limited extent by the SA Government via the Department of State Development (DSD), TESEP, AusIMM, the GSA, ASEG and PESA, however these sponsorships are insufficient to appoint our much-needed Project Officer. Success is likely to be very limited if this important work is left to unpaid volunteers. In which case it is likely that the status quo will persist ....... probably only around 50 students in only 4 schools would take up the new Year 12 EES course. This is currently the case with SACE Year 12 Geology, which in 2016 is studied by less than 30 students in only 4 schools. From 2017 Earth and Environmental Science will be the only senior secondary science offered in SA schools that gives students opportunity to study the major issues of our time, the impact of human activity on the Earth, the dangers of climate change, investigating sustainability and alternative energy sources from a scientific perspective. We believe that this side of education is being grossly overlooked and that it should be an important part of learning and preparation for responsible citizenship.
