In 2016, Melbourne City Council erected the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner monument at the site where these two Indigenous freedom fighters were executed on 20 January 1842 — the first two people hung in Victoria for resisting British colonisation.

Since 2006, at midday on 20 of January, the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee (TMCC) has held a public ceremony to honour the tens of thousands of First Nations men, women, and children who were slaughtered during the colonisation process — a process whose impacts continue to profoundly affect First Nations people today.

At 8.00am on Tuesday 20th January 1842, over 5,000 people, a quarter of Victoria’s white population, gathered at the outskirts of Melbourne crowding round the gallows erected on a small rise east of Swanston St, north of La Trobe St. The crowd, in a carnival mood, had come to see the public ex*****on of Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner – the first two people executed in Victoria. The colonisation of Australia was a brutal affair that continues to have a profound impact on First Nations people, as well as the rest of Australians. This undeclared war was carried out in secret by settler culture that was based on theft, r**e and murder. While most indigenous Australians who died in this undeclared war were poisoned, starved, shot on sight, hacked to pieces or victims of germ warfare, Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner were publicly executed in Melbourne on the 20th January 1842 for daring to resist the colonisers.

"As a young person, what does reconciliation mean to you?"

The Ellen José Student Reconciliation Awards are aimed at Bayside primary and secondary school students, bringing awareness of reconciliation to our young people, who are the future of Australia, through art and writing. Entrants are asked to interpret "As a young person, what does reconciliation mean to you?" in their artwork or writing piece.

This year, Dr Joseph Toscano from the Ellen José Memorial Foundation, Ellen José’s children Libera Toscano Sasmana and Joshua Toscano, and Bayside City Council, Victoria Mayor, Fiona Stitfold, had the challenging responsibility of judging the exceptional finalists and selecting winners in the art categories of Prep-Grade 3 and Grade 4-6 and the visual art and written category for secondary school students.

Congratulations to the young winners who were awarded their prizes at the Flag Raising Ceremony on Saturday 25 May, marking the start of Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June).
