Everyone is talking about raising our boys right now.
About raising boys who respect women.
Who understand consent.
Who listen when someone says no.
Who recognise boundaries.
Who grow into kind, emotionally intelligent men.
And yes. We ABSOLUTELY need to be having those conversations.
AND, we also need to remember the beautiful little boys standing in front of us now.
Their soft hearts. Their big feelings. The things they treasure. The little voices learning how to speak up for themselves.
When a boy says, “Stop.”
When he says, “That’s mine.”
When he says, “Please don’t.”
When he tells us something is special to him.
We need to listen. 🫶🏼
We cannot teach boys that other people’s boundaries matter while diminishing their own. We cannot minimise their hurt, ask them to simply move on, or protect someone else from discomfort at the expense of acknowledging what happened to them.
If we want boys to understand that no means no, they need to grow up knowing their no means something too.
If we want them to respect other people’s feelings, we need to show them that theirs are worthy of respect.
And if we want them to take accountability, they need to see us model what accountability looks like.
They are beautiful, tender, feeling little souls deserving of the same gentleness, protection and respect we hope they will one day give to others.
Raise good men, absolutely.
But love and protect the little boys along the way. 🤍
