WELCOME DJERAN šš If youāve noticed a cooler change in the weather this week, you wonāt be surprised to hear itās the beginning of a new season, Djeran.
Djeran is one of the six Noongar seasons, typically experienced in April and May.
This time of year was traditionally a time for mia mias (houses or shelters) to be repaired and updated to make sure they were waterproofed in readiness for the deep wintery months to come.
Unlike the meteorological seasons we use in Australia, the Noongar seasons do not have a fixed date instead determined by environmental indicators.
Hereās a couple of things in the environment to keep an eye out for to know Djeran is on itās way, according to Noongar elder Noel Nannup.
š¬ļøThe wind change. Noel says thereās a distinctive change in the wind from north-east to south-west (thatās happened this week).
š· Blooming gums and banksiaās. Keep an eye out for the off-white flowers of the marri, as well as the flowering red-gum in the south-west and the āsummer flameā banksia in the central-west.
š¾ Animal movements- Noel says this time of year the pelicans will migrate. You may also notice fewer spiders as the weather cools down and flying ants with the light winds.

No more reading wars!
Itās time to stop debating how to teach kids to read and follow the science Most children need help learning to read, but thereās long-standing disagreement on how best to help them. Decades of research have identified the most effective approaches.
