Today marks 60 Years of Independence for our little Island 🇨🇾
Happy National Day to all our Cypriot Friends and Καλό Μήνα - Happy October! Todays holiday in Cyprus commemorates gaining independence from Britain on October 1st 1960! 🎉 🇨🇾 🎉
Following the end of the Russo-Turkish war in 1878, Cyprus was leased to the British Empire and was formally annexed by Britain at the end of the First World War. Since the time of Ottoman rule, the concept of 'enosis' - a union with Greece had been an ideal held by many Greek Cypriots. In April 1955, this ideal became a military aim, with the start of the guerilla campaign of the EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston) whose aim was unification with Greece through armed struggle.
The campaign against the British lasted for the next four years. A cease-fire was reached in August 1960 and Cyprus attained independence after the Zurich and London Agreement between the United Kingdom, Greece and Turkey.
The Republic of Cyprus came into being on August 19th 1960, and on September 20th, Cyprus joined the United Nations and the British Commonwealth. On the stroke of midnight on October 1st 1960, the agreement of independence between the United Kingdom, Greece and Turkey and the British governor read a British proclamation declaring the independence of Cyprus. Archbishop Marakios III, the leader of the island's Greek community became the first President of Cyprus.
Independence Day in Cyprus is marked by festivals and a military parade in the capital, Nicosia. Infantry and mechanised units from the National Guard, Greek Forces in Cyprus and the Police and the Fire Service all participate in the annual parade.
🎉 🧡 🤍 💚 🎉 🎉 🇨🇾

TODAY IN HISTORY | the First of April or Πρώτη Απριλίου is a fundamental day in Cyprus’ history marking the day in 1955 when EOKA - Εθνική Οργάνωσις Κυπρίων Αγωνιστών [The National Organisation of Cypriot Freedom Fighters] launched their 4 year struggle against British military and other operations found across the island. Many lives were unfortunately lost before February 1959 when Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and the UK signed an agreement which lead to the EOKA forces’s disbandment. This lead to the establishment of the independent Republic of Cyprus in 1960
The image attached is from the Imprisoned Graves of the EOKA fighters in Nicosia’s Jail, now part of a museum in the country’s capital.
The EOKA movement shaped the fate of the island and today remains a national holiday.

A few pictures from the funeral of Archbishop Stylianos which was held today. A truly moving service.
Αιωνία του η μνήμη.

As you have probably heard, this week we lost a key figure in the maintenance and strengthening of our Greek Orthodox Faith, Hellenic Culture and Cypriot identity in Australia.
His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, served as the Archbishop of Australia since 1975 and has been a strong supporter of the Cyprus Hellene Club since our establishment in 1978.
It was an honour to have His Eminence attend many events throughout the years and support amongst other things our annual memorial of the July 1974 invasion. He leaves behind an undeniable lasting legacy.

Αιωνία του η μνήμη. Eternal be his memory.
