In a season where commercial beef producers are demanding more from every joining, buyers delivered a resounding endorsement of the Santa Gertrudis breed at the opening Santa Gertrudis sale of 2026 at Northampton, WA yesterday.

With weight, scale, fertility and adaptability firmly front of mind, producers were chasing bulls capable of performing under pressure, thriving in tough conditions while still delivering marketโ€‘ready beef with strong yield and compliance.

The Biara Santa Gertrudis Stud sale offered 87 bulls, with 77 selling for a clearance rate of 88.5%, at an average of $7,026 and a top price of $24,000.

The sale grossed $541,000, marking the best result for the Hasleby family this decade and underscoring the relevance and momentum of the Biara breeding program.

The result carried added significance, with Glenn and Zoe Hasleby now firmly at the helm, continuing the work established by Glennโ€™s parents, John and Maree Hasleby, who were present on the day to witness the outstanding outcome in the 50th year of Biara's operation.

The sale was conducted in two parts.

Selected stud sires and a small number of herd bulls were offered through the ring, while the balance were marketed via the Helmsman auction system, allowing buyers extended inspection time and private, competitive bidding through accredited auctioneers.

Sale breakdown
Lots 1โ€“50 (Ring Sale)

โ€ข Average: $8,469
โ€ข Total: $406,500

Lots 51โ€“90 (Helmsman System)
โ€ข 39 offered, 29 sold
โ€ข Top price: $7,000
โ€ข Average: $4,638
โ€ข Total: $134,500

Top price on the day was paid by Jason Kanny, Bonegilla Grazing, Walkaway (WA), who secured Lot 2 โ€“ Biara 4056 (PP) for $24,000.

The classified S bull is sired by Gyranda Newton N202 (PP) out of a Biara cow carrying Rosevale bloodlines.

A 24โ€‘monthโ€‘old rising sire with a full panel of EBVs and a dark, slick coat, he shared the honours of heaviest bull in the draft at 796kg.

Mr Kanny said the bull would be joined over Angus cows, producing F1 females that are then mated to Charolais terminal sires.

Progeny are finished in Bonegilla Grazingโ€™s onโ€‘property feedlot for approximately 100 days, before being processed and sold through a retail butcher shop in Perth, supplying demand for highโ€‘quality, consistent and tender beef.

The second top price of $22,000 was paid for Lot 7 โ€“ Biara 4111 (P), a Gyranda Proverb P678 (PP) son out of a Biara cow with Rowanlea blood, purchased by David Greenup, Rosevale Santa Gertrudis Stud, Jandowae (Qld).

West Australian commercial producers were strong throughout the sale, particularly those seeking bulls to inject weight, scale and performance into their calf drops.

The strong presence of repeat and volume buyers highlighted confidence in cattle that can handle tough seasons, remain productive, and still deliver saleable beef that meets market specifications.

Repeat clients assembling multiple lots included Scott Henville, Cunyu Station, Wiluna, Kim and Cindy Parsons, Coolawanyah Station, Tom Price, and Ben Campbell, Mundrabilla Station on the Nullabor on the WA-SA border securing 10 head apiece.

Gascoyne producer and lotfeeder Dean Ryan, Minnie Creek Station, purchased nine head, while last yearโ€™s standout volume buyer Adi Spindler, Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation, returned to secure eight head of S bulls and herd bulls for the Meekatharra operation she manages, after purchasing 19 head in 2025.
