📖 Chapter 13: Straight From Their Hive 🍯🐝

This is what makes the Adopt a Hive journey so special.
The students had the chance to explore fresh honeycomb straight from the very hive they’ve been following throughout the year. 🍯

Touching, tasting and investigating the honeycomb opened up another whole area of learning, as students explored the products bees make, where our food comes from and what we can create and do with these products.

It’s a beautiful hands-on connection to Design & Technologies: Food and Fibre Production, and another example of just how far the learning can extend from one hive.

From following their bees to experiencing something those bees have actually produced. 💛

🐝 Teacher Resource Idea: Take the learning outside!

A Habitat Walk is such a simple way to get students looking more closely at the environment around them.

What can they find? 🌿
Where might insects find food, water and shelter?
What is flowering?
Where could a bee make its home?

It’s a great opportunity to build observation skills, ask questions and make connections between habitats, insects and the environment right outside the classroom.

Our Habitat Walk is one of the teacher resources included in Adopt a Hive, helping the learning continue well beyond the initial experience.

Sometimes the best classroom is just outside the classroom door. 🐝🌱

Chapter 12: Our Habitat Audit 🐝💧

The learning continues on our Adopt a Hive journey!

After completing a habitat audit around their school, students looked closely at what their environment was providing for insects and pollinators.
They discovered something was missing… safe water sources. 💧

So they decided to do something about it!
The students got to work creating bee water sources, providing safe places for bees and other insects to stop for a drink.

This is what I love about where the Adopt a Hive journey can lead. Students are observing their environment, identifying a need and taking practical action to make a difference.

And that’s what we’re all about.

🐝🌻 The learning keeps growing!

Our Adopt a Hive journey is about so much more than what happens inside the hive. It’s about discovering the important connections between bees, plants, pollination and the environment around us.

Some of our upper primary classes have begun seed saving, collecting and drying sunflower seeds to create the beginnings of a seed bank. These seeds can be planted again or shared, helping to grow future pollinator-friendly spaces. 🌻🌱

It’s a simple sustainability activity that connects beautifully back to the bees and shows just how far the learning can grow from one hive.

One hive. So many opportunities for learning. 🐝💛

📖 Chapter 11: The Learning Keeps Growing

🐝 A little teacher inspiration from Mullaloo Beach Community Kindy!

Today a lovely teacher introduced me to the delightful book A Good Place by Lucy Cousins.

This class has been using the story to explore habitats and insects, leading to some wonderful conversations about the challenges our insects face, including chemicals, urbanisation and rubbish, and what we can do to help. 🌱🐝🐞

It was also a beautiful way to front load the students before my visit. They already had ideas, vocabulary and plenty of connections ready to make when the bees arrived!

Their teacher had created an amazing classroom mural that the children continue to add to as their learning journey develops. I love it. 💛

One of the privileges of visiting classrooms across WA is getting to see these wonderful learning opportunities in action and being able to share a little of that inspiration with other teachers.

🐝 A little Kindy teacher inspiration from Ursula Frayne Catholic College!

One of the things I love about visiting classrooms is seeing just how creatively teachers bring a theme to life.

Sensory play, creative crafts, insect discovery areas, fine motor activities and directed drawing. So many different learning opportunities, all connected through bees and insects. 🐝🌻

For our youngest learners, learning through play, creating, exploring and doing just makes sense.

Another lovely reminder that a bee theme can take you in so many directions across the Kindy classroom.

🐝 Time to check in on our hive!

Our Adopt a Hive journey is well underway, which means it's time for our first update from the apiary.

Tony has been checking in on the Mullaloo Beach Primary School hive to see how the bees are settling in, what's been happening inside and what changes he can already see.

These regular updates are such an important part of the journey. They give students another window into their real working hive and something new to observe, discuss and wonder about back in the classroom.

Because a hive never stands still, and neither does the learning. 🐝🌼
