International Academy of Music Hobart IAM teaches music as individual lessons and group classes. Ages 0-102. It's never too late to learn an instrument.

We don't really do social media anymore, but happy to chat by text, whatsapp, email, or in person over a decent coffee or a decent craft b**r! Enjoy learning how to play an instrument or sing in a friendly, safe and encouraging environment. We offer lessons in 10 different instruments including Piano, Keyboard, Guitar, Bass, Uke, Drums and Vocal. Whether you're into classical, pop, rock or want to compose your own songs, there is an option for you. More than 250 students aged from 2 to 102 learn piano, vocal, guitar, bass, ukelele, keyboard and drums through individual lessons and group classes. We have a team of wonderful teachers and loyal students who love to learn in a creative and inspiring space. Our experienced and qualified teachers work across a range of genres and instruments, providing expertise and guidance. Beginning as Kawai Music School at Geoff Long Music in North Hobart, the International Academy of Music Hobart (IAM) builds on 60+ years of quality music education and employs 7 teachers. We are Tasmania’s only licensed Encore Academy and Microwave your Music provider in Rock/Pop/Vocal lessons, teaching all levels of Australia’s own international music curriculum and we are host to Hobart’s only international live concert exams.

After 10 years teaching at IAM, Miss Sarah is moving north with her family.
Her Grade-4 group piano class, many of whom are also moving on next year to continue their music at school, in bands, or with the TYO, spent this year exploring composition styles.

Each student wrote a piece of Jazz, Rock, Blues, Funk, Disco, or Classical using at least one transposing instrument, then notated it and performed it live with the help of a few back-up muso's.

Sarah has also helped prepare students for exams from absolute beginner right up to Grade-8 level.

Music is so much more than a fun hobby, it should be viewed as a long term investment in the betterment of self. A minimum of 5 years is ideally what it takes to gain the maximum brain benefits, and by extension life benefits. But longer is even better, and it doesn't have to be all at once!

CONGRATULATIONS to all the students who completed their Musicianship , Diploma, or Concert Exam LAST SUNDAY!
It was a day full of fun, some silliness, and of course, music! With so many wonderful performances from students of ALL ages, stories, and different instruments.

We LOVE Concert Exams because they are such a fun and approachable way to do an exam, learning real life skills, and a warm supportive audience to help you through.

A HUGE Thank you to the Magnanimous Matthews Tyson (International Examiner and Founder of St Cecilia Examinations Intl.) for bringing your experience and wisdom to our musicians.

The next in person Exam session is right here NEXT YEAR, June 2025.

We LOVE Concert Exams, and are incredibly passionate about this wonderful, life skill-building, encouraging, and empowering experience (yes, still an exam!), created by St Cecilia Examinations Intl.
The best thing is, it doesn't matter your age or instrument, you can do one! AANNND you don't even have to be a student of IAM to participate!
Our students and Grown Ups love them too!

Hopefully one day ALL music exams will be this good!

Did you know Lyndon had given up ever offering any more music exams until he found St Cecilia?
After years of dealing with distressed students and distressed parents, Lyndon thought music exams were counterproductive and a waste of time. So he researched the exam providers and couldn't believe that the most progressive, innovative, real-world exams are actually Tasmanian!

Now we want to encourage every student at every level to take St Cecilia exams because they offer life-long skills you can't learn in lessons alone.

Real-world, innovative, practical skills for life, not just music! And TCE rated at the highest level.
