The Real Cause of Debt:
Most people think they understand why they have debt. They might say: I grew up. I have bills now. Life got more expensive!
That’s partly true. But it’s not the full answer. If simply growing up caused debt, then previous generations—who had far less than we do—would be the most financially stressed. They’re not. So
something else is going on. What Changed?
As life progresses, expenses increase. That’s normal. You move out. You pay rent or a mortgage.
You take on responsibilities. But that alone doesn’t explain why debt becomes overwhelming.
We now live in a world where credit is easy to access, spending is constant, costs continue to rise and lifestyle expectations are higher than ever. Yes, the economy plays a role. Inflation, housing costs, and uncertainty all affect us. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: Most people had more opportunity than previous generations and still ended up with more debt.
The real cause of debt is simple -
it’s not how much we earn—it’s how much we spend.
Debt is created through patterns. Not one big mistake. But a series of many small, repeated ones.
How It Actually Happens:
Debt rarely appears overnight. It builds slowly with a purchase here, a bill there, something unexpected and something desired. Over time, these small gaps between income and spending accumulate. Eventually, the balance grows to a point where it feels overwhelming.
