Subsidised Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Opportunity

Are you a UON student interested in building your confidence to support young people’s mental health and wellbeing?

Two upcoming Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training courses are being offered at Callaghan, and enrollments are now open! This training is being facilitated by our very own Abbie Smith, and students who complete the course will receive a 3-year accreditation as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

📅 Training Schedule
The course will be delivered across four sessions, with two offerings to choose from.

Stream One: Thursdays from 4:30pm to 8:00pm
- Session 1: 2nd of April
- Session 2: 9th of April
- Session 3: 16th of April
- Session 4: 23rd of April

Stream Two: Fridays from 4:00pm to 7:30pm
- Session 1: 10th of April
- Session 2: 17th of April
- Session 3: 24th of April
- Session 4: 1st of May

Please note that participants MUST attend all four sessions to be eligible for accreditation and must complete all four sessions within the same stream, unless cross-stream attendance has been requested and approved by Abbie.

📖 Course Content
This nationally recognised and accredited training provides practical skills to:
1. Recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health challenges in young people
2. Respond appropriately in a mental health crisis
3. Offer initial support and guidance to young people experiencing poor mental health
4. Increased confidence in responding to and supporting the wellbeing of young people

🎫 Course Cost
Abbie is running the course at a subsidised rate of $185 for students. This cost covers:
- Required MHFA fees
- A take‑home manual
- Attendance at all four sessions
- Accreditation administration

Further discounts are available for pairs/group bookings or in circumstances of financial hardship.

This 2 day course includes registration for both days, a take home Youth Mental Health First Aid Manual and 3 year accreditation as a Youth Mental Health First Aider with a recognised certificate provided upon successful completion.

You will learn how to provide initial support to young people aged 12 to 18 who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis until professional help is available or the situation improves. The course teaches you to recognise signs of common mental health concerns, respond using an evidence based action plan and encourage appropriate help seeking.

1️⃣ Child and adolescent mental health difficulties are rising in prevalence, both globally and in Australia.

2️⃣ Many preservice teachers report elevated learning-related anxiety, and ECT's report low self-efficacy and high stress when responding to student mental health concerns.

3️⃣ Teachers are expected to support students’ mental health, while often lacking training, role clarity and support themselves, putting teacher wellbeing at risk.
