From the Kotara High classroom to the stage

In November last year grunge band Jetlag (Cooper C, Cooper G, Reuben K and Toby U in Year 11) represented Kotara High at Bandwidth, Newcastle and the Hunter region’s biggest rock band competition, taking out the major prize.

Their prize included recording an original single and producing a professional music video with TommiRock and a live performance opportunity through EAO Entertainment – and the band have made the most of it!

Jetlag’s first single Sight for Sore Eyes was released in June and the music video followed in August.

And they have just announced that their live performance will be held next week with the band headlining an all-ages show at King Street Warehouse on Sunday 18 October.

The single launch for their second single Turbulence will feature Jetlag alongside other young Newcastle acts: Citruss, Molly’s Garden and Glycerine . With this event they are also creating opportunities for other young emerging musicians, photographers, videographers, reviewers and artists, and for young people to experience live music with their friends at a professional venue.

We are very proud to see four students who started making music together at our school turn a band comp win into an amazing event and create something for young people in Newcastle.

Congratulations to Hunter, who won the Excellence in Aboriginal Student Leadership Award at the Muloobinbah AECG Make a Difference Awards last week.

This award recognises Aboriginal students who contribute to their school and community, and serve as role models for younger students. We are proud to see Hunter’s leadership recognised.

We’re also proud of Gabriella and Kealah who were presenters on the night.

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) ALERT!
This term three Science Extension students completed their major project, a 3500-4000 word scientific report on an area of their choosing. These three students spent the best part of a year coming up with an idea, researching it, designing and conducting an experiment and reporting on their findings. Mr Blackmore wants to celebrate these students for all their hard work and resilience during the scientific process. Science Extension is a course for high performing students and the work produced by all three was amazing. Below is each student's name and the title of their final report. All three will be submitted for consideration in the upcoming Department of Education Science Journal.

Finn - An Investigation of the Influence of Shape Stabilisation in a Projectile on the Relationship of Gyroscopic Stabilisation and Precision at Low Velocities

Jessica - Do AFL balls need to be replaced? An investigation into the effect of surface roughness on the magnus effect of prolate spheroids in order to optimise AFL ball performance.

Veronica - Delaying The Initial Dissolution of Pharmaceuticals: A look at the effect of gastric phosphate concentrations on medicinal gelatine capsule permeability

Mr Blackmore would like to extend his thanks to the University of Newcastle for their support in providing a conductivity probe for Veronica and a wind tunnel for Jessica. Without their assistance, both experiments never would have been possible.

There is an important event that our Kotara High School community are getting involved in — I Run for Her, supporting the Newcastle-based organisation Got Your Back Sista.

Got Your Back Sista supports women and children who have experienced domestic and family violence. They provide practical support, care and opportunities that help women rebuild their lives and move towards a safer and more positive future.
I Run for Her is about more than just running or walking. It is an opportunity for our school community to come together, raise awareness of domestic and family violence, support a local organisation and encourage conversations around respectful and healthy relationships.

This is particularly relevant to our school community because domestic and family violence is an issue that affects people in our own local area. In 2024–25, Newcastle recorded a domestic-violence-related assault rate of around 510 incidents per 100,000 people, compared with around 453 per 100,000 across NSW. These figures are based on incidents reported to police and don't capture every experience of domestic and family violence.

For our students, being involved provides an opportunity to develop empathy, community awareness and a greater understanding of respect and healthy relationships. It also allows young people to see that they can contribute positively to their community and support causes that are making a difference locally.

Most importantly, this is an opportunity for students to come together with their school community, be active, support a local charity and help raise awareness of an issue that affects many families and communities.

We would love to see our Kotara High School community get behind I Run for Her.

We will be meeting at Warners Bay Esplanade at 8:30am (opposite the cafes). There will be a 3K run group, 5K run group and a walking group amongst our Kotara High team.
