Four Questions Every Expecting Parent Should Ask Their Antenatal Care Provider
The care provider you choose can have a significant influence on your pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience. Asking thoughtful questions early on helps you understand whether their philosophy aligns with your values & birth goals.
1) How do you usually support physiological birth, & where do you stand on the medicalisation spectrum?
Not every provider approaches birth the same way. Some see birth as a normal physiological process that should be protected whenever possible, while others may have a lower threshold for intervention. Understanding their philosophy helps you know what kind of support you’re likely to receive.
2) What is your approach if labour is progressing slowly, but both baby & birthing parent are healthy?
Labour doesn’t always follow a timetable. Ask whether your provider is comfortable with patience and watchful waiting when everyone is well, or whether interventions are commonly recommended. Sometimes, time is exactly what labour needs.
3) Which interventions are considered routine in your practice—and which are optional?
Not everything offered during labour is mandatory (or anything really..). Understanding what is routine, what is evidence-based & what you can choose or declined helps you make informed decisions with confidence.
✨ 4. How are my birth preferences communicated & respected during labour & shift changes?
Birth often involves multiple care providers. Ask how your wishes are documented & handed over so your voice remains central, even when the team changes.
🩷 Remember, these questions aren’t about challenging your care provider—they’re about building a relationship based on trust, communication & shared decision-making.
🩷 When you feel informed, supported & respected, you’re more likely to approach birth with confidence rather than fear.
Because preparing for birth isn’t just about knowing what might happen—it’s about knowing how to advocate for the experience you hope to have.
