💡Maths for our kids, particularly in primary, isn’t about memorising steps - it’s about understanding ideas and connecting ideas.

It’s about developing such a deep understanding of concepts that when:
✅they are presented with a new concept, they’re ready.
✅they have to use it in a new way, they’re ready.
✅they have to combine concepts, they’re ready
✅they move grades, they’re ready.

You may disagree with the methods, and that’s ok, but your child’s confidence grows when home and school are on the same team, bringing consistency to their learning.👌

Whether you agree with the way maths is being taught these days, stay curious, stay open to learning different methods and support the learning being done in your child’s classroom.

When home and school work together, kids thrive - and that’s the truth.

The 2026 NAPLAN results made one thing clear: partnership matters. Adam Spencer said it in the The Sydney Morning Herald, and teachers have been saying it for years - what happens at home changes how kids show up at school.

You don’t need to teach the maths. The teachers will do that. You just need to be present. Curious. Connected to their learning.

Start small.

When home and school work together, kids win - and that’s the truth.

They’re a part of our lives so why not make the most of them?

Clarity meant consistency.

Yes, of course you want your child to know this fact (and others like it) ‘off by heart’, but if they don’t, wishing wont make it so!

Instead, help them create some context around the question so they understand what the question is asking of them.

Then let them build or draw the story so they can represent their solution.

These steps may seem superfluous to us, but we instantly know and understand what the question is asking.

We didn’t always though, and yes, we learnt things by rote, but today we build understanding so it can become more than just an answer.

Knowing facts ‘off by heart’ does not always mean there is understanding…and without understanding, there will be problems down the track.

Trust me. I’ve seen it.

You may not like how they are learning things ‘these days’ but this is their journey. Walk with them. Learn with them. It will make things so much easier for everyone.
