I applied CRABS 🦀 to GG’s content way back in February 2024. It’s a masterclass in effective communication:
• excellent brand strategy
• strategic use of visuals to support narrative
• inferring science through language and references
• accessible language
It’s also completely unqualified and in many places very, very inaccurate. See .dietitian’s pinned post!
What could qualified scientists learn from this for their own comms strategy? So much. Have a consistent, coordinated message. Simplify. Use visuals to illustrate the message.

Teachers on social media?
I’m not a teacher, so certainly won’t speak for teachers! The parallels between nursing and teaching are very interesting to me, in particular the discourse around personal and professional identity.
From a legal standpoint there are some interesting cases that set precedent.
What are your thoughts?

Signed, a jaded gal who just wants:
• Improved chances of surviving cardiac arrest (and the multitude of other health disparities)
• Policies that remove structural barriers
• Recognition and remuneration for the mounds of mental and emotional labour required to succeed
• Consideration of the cumulative effect of intersectionality (apart from my gender, I have very few barriers to success ✨ privilege ✨)
Ok, back to my little cave!

In 2016 I was a fresh new mum on maternity leave trying to keep my PhD ticking along.
A few short months later I was made redundant (I still have questions about the legality of that one).
As an aspiring academic I was lost. How would I progress my career with a small child and less than 5 years experience as a very junior staff member of a medical school.
Fast forward to 2026, a lot can happen in 10 years! Another kiddo, a PhD, 3 or 4 more moves, and new career titles. I’ve carried beautiful friendships, and left others.
I see glimpses of 2016 Jess - a love of travel, systems, and sunshine. I hope I’m not as naive and rigid as 2016 Jess 🌸
Remember these ads? Seared in my brain!
UV Radiation triggers a number of processes in the skin. Some good (like Vit D production), some bad (like degradation of skin cells). A tan is a sign that your skin is attempting to protect itself from damage. Over time, our skin becomes permanently damaged, and in some cases cancer develops.
Do you think these old campaigns would be effective today?
Big zinc has entered the chat.👀👀👀
Excellent journalism by , uncovering some different issues with zinc manufacturing and possible ??loopholes.
What was most interesting to me was that there seemed to be a commercial interest by this zinc manufacturer to discredit other sunscreen ingredients as “poison”. Curiouser and curiouser!
So how to choose the best sunscreen?
Personally, here’s what I would do:
• Choose an SPF 50 product
• Search the ARTG to confirm it is actually registered
• Ask the company if they have public SPF testing results to share
• ensure you apply enough!
• spot test the product (if you burn within 20 mins, you might have reason to be concerned)
I would also probably not use a zinc based sunscreen out of an abundance of caution, unless there are verifiable, public SPF testing results available

Those Oakley wrap arounds all the cool kids are wearing are actually doing something 😂😂
UV radiation can cause acute and chronic damage to the eyes, just like our skin. So it’s important to wear sunglasses and avoid looking at the sun.
Acute issues include “eye burn” or acute photokeratopathy, while long term issues include cancer and cataracts.
When looking for sunglasses, you should look for Sunglasses that are:
• close fitting and wrap around
• lens category 2 or above (as per ANZ standard) - this should be on the label
You should not look directly at the sun with or without sunglasses!
Are your sunnies lens category 2 or above?

Are you making this mistake?
Applying enough sunscreen when it’s a tinted product is tricky because you normally don’t apply enough. Oops!
I always recommend applying a primary, untinted sunscreen first - and if your BB cream or makeup has a bit of SPF, that’s a bonus 👏🏼

Are you worried about modesty during surgery?
Welcome to a new episode of !
These 10 minute tutorials are designed to help you read research papers with a critical eye! Today’s topic is modesty garments in surgery.
Do patients feel safe wearing “modesty” garments during surgery? I would have thought the answer to this was a no brainer! But, surprisingly, this study had negative results.
Patients were randomised to usual gown or usual gown and undergarments and were asked a few questions before or after. There was no statistically significant result.
Disappointingly, the data is poorly reported and overstated, resulting in recommendations to go out and buy undergarments.

Mis and disinformation is sneaky. One of the strategies is to use bots to overwhelm
Like in this example, the fake profile uses false messages to invoke concern and fear, all to sell a product, that allegedly does not exist.
With an overwhelming volume of information at our fingertips, it is more crucial than ever that we are sceptical on first read.
If you’re coming across me for the first time, google me! Am I real? What is my expertise? Should you listen to me?
How do you remain sceptical?
