Dr Sandy MacQuarrie, PhD is a Paramedic and educator offering tutoring for paramedicine students. I have trained to the level of Critical Care Flight Paramedic.

He takes many years of teaching and offers a customised approach to your learning I have been a paramedic for over 30 years with experience in the ground and aeromedical settings. Over my career, I have been fortunate to be involved in the education of many paramedicine students, in Canada and now Australia.

Confidence in paramedicine doesn’t come from knowing everything — it comes from being prepared, reflective, and willing to learn. Whether you’re gearing up for your first placement or tackling complex case studies, small steps every day add up.

Review your notes, practise your communication, and don’t be afraid to ask questions — that’s how you grow. And if something isn’t making sense, don’t stress — that’s where good guidance makes all the difference.

I work with Australian paramedicine students to build confidence, strengthen clinical reasoning, and turn self-doubt into readiness for the road ahead.

Studying paramedicine is as much about looking after yourself as learning new skills. Long study sessions and emotional simulation cases can take their toll. Remember: stepping away for a walk, listening to music, or checking in with a mate is never wasted time. You’ll come back fresher and stronger—ready to take on whatever uni (or the next placement) throws at you. If you ever need advice balancing study and sanity, I’m here to help. Scenario time! Picture this: You and your partner arrive at a home to find an unconscious adult who’s breathing shallowly and slowly. Family says it happened suddenly. What are your immediate priorities? How would you approach this scene? Comment with your first three actions, or share what you find most challenging about these scenarios. Let’s learn from each other—and if these situations feel intimidating, I can help you build confidence with step-wise approaches

Paramedic training covers a HUGE amount of science and practical skills—it can be overwhelming! Remember, you don’t need to know it all overnight. Take ECG interpretation, for example: start with the basics—rate, rhythm, and axis—before diving into advanced patterns. Breaking topics into smaller sections helps you master each skill step by step. Feeling stuck? You’re not alone. Ask questions, reach out, or DM me if you’d like personal support in breaking down tough topics or email at [email protected]
