The Glen Eira Mayor until recently Cr Jim Magee was voted in at the last council elections based on a key election promise to work and build a council run hub with affordable child care. Not only was there no progress on this, only a few months go he lead the closure of Glen Eira City Council jewel in the crown day care and kindergarten services with the current Mayor Anne Marie (who’s election promise to be the ‘voice of reason’ and “compassionate approach’ were never demonstrated throughout the ELC debacle) and the rest of the Glen Eira 5, ignoring the community and state and federal MP’s pleas to provide funding. What empty ‘promises’ will we expecting to hear and see at this election!?

They did a bad, bad thing! The Glen Eira 5, they Mayor Anne Marie, Cr Jim Magee Cr Margaret and Cr Sam ignored all the social, economic and community data, cues and feedback and turned their backs on early education, families, staff and women in Glen Eira City Council. If only they chose to “do nothing” like they have with the QueenSAVEtrees Group to save face

“This Budget strikes the right balance between ambition for new initiatives, maintaining quality service delivery and remaining financially viable.” Had this council not prided itself on being such a low rate charging council and applied even a conservative 1% increase like other councils over the past 20 years, they would be equipped to handle changes in the economic landscape around them and not remove services from their community….. regardless of how little the cost of the ELC’s was and how it could have been addressed!

Glen Eira City Council making 35 exceptional early learning educators redundant when there were so many other options is not what anyone needed and nor was it in line with any of the overwhelming community feedback.

How could the Glen Eira 5, The councillors that voted to close the Early Learning Centres only a month ago, speak so critically of the interests and motivations of the MP’s who tried to approach them to discuss providing government grants to keep centres running and staff employed, stating they didn’t believe they would receive anything, yet earlier in the year put their hands out for $100k for bike paths?

Rushed decisions, making arrangements that don’t reflect the needs or wants of the community, choosing when and how to work with or collaborate with other levels of government….. it’s all very concerning if you’re in Glen Eira! Recent changes on it’s position with the trees on Queens Avenue and it’s backflip in December at the last council meeting, stating it plans to replant 2-1 and allow the removal, changing it’s position and putting time pressure on it just like it did with an unrealistic time frame on consultation for the ELC’s!

Happy New Year post….. but not a great start to 2024 for everyone in Glen Eira with over 150 families facing into complete uncertainty, soon to be thrown out of their day care and kindergarten in a few months, as well as the 35 staff about to be made redundant. I wonder if like the ELC’s, Glen Eira council will also let the Queens Avenue trees disappear in 2024 for the LXRP or actually stand up and do what their community wants for a change?

From the outside looking in, this feels like it could be something that Glen Eira City Council could also be battling internally, being lead into making decisions like closing the ELC’s which completely ignore what the community actually needs and wants…. What do you think?

This was the day after the decision but impacted families tell us below in the comments how you have gone finding arrangements for 2024? How has this terrible timing impacted your Christmas break? We need more councillors like Cr Tony, Cr Simone and Cr Li who will fight for residents and solutions, not make snap decisions that blame shift, remove critical services and ignore all the factors.

There is a lot wrong going on in Glen Eira City Council at the moment, and even more instances of the council and some councillors not listening and paying respect to community consultation!

This is another thing they are trying to sneak right under resident’s noses and take off the table before councillor elections in 2024, just like they have done with the ELC’s closing in March.
