Congratulations Balcombe Grammar community.

We raised $1,138 for The Epilepsy Foundation from last week's Free Dress Day and sales from the delicious Purple Sparkle Cookies our Rotary Interact students made for the occasion.

We will aim to double the amount of sparkle next time round.

Inspiring our young entrepreneurs...

The B.I.T.E. (Business, Innovation, Technology, Efficiency) Conference is the Mornington Peninsula's premier business event, with this year's program featuring keynote speakers, discussion panels, and a business expo focused on AI, automation, and business growth. It was a valuable opportunity for two of our Year 10 students to hear directly from high-profile business leaders, including Olympic gold medallist and CEO Grant Hackett, who shared how the mental discipline and resilience behind his swimming career translated into building high-performing business teams. It was a great chance for our students to see real-world applications of the concepts covered in Year 10 Entrepreneurship.

Students reflected on the day....

'If I had one highlight from this experience, it would definitely be seeing Rocko the humanoid robot, who in the future will be core to assisting businesses in their everyday tasks through AI. I would highly recommend this conference to students who are willing to explore new ideas and ways of thinking, as it can be very beneficial for the future and can open up new pathways in life.'

What an incredible start to Busking for Change 2026!

Since launching our fundraising, Balcombe Grammar School has already climbed into the TOP 5 schools on the leaderboard.

Our Primary students have been busy learning Minyan Ngabangka (What's in the Water?), this year's Busking for Change song. Featuring English and Murrawarri language, the song was created by DOBBY, Kelsey Iris and children from Brewarrina and celebrates Community, Country and language.

There is also a special story behind the water connection. Brewarrina is home to Baiame's Ngunnhu (Fish Traps), an extraordinary Aboriginal structure dating back more than 40,000 years. The fish traps demonstrate the Community's deep and enduring connection to the river and Country.

Now we'd love our whole Balcombe Grammar community - Primary and Secondary students, staff and families - to get behind us.

Our goal is to raise $1,000 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Students are encouraged to check with their families about donating $1 or $2 and to spread the word to grandparents, relatives and family friends who may also like to support our campaign.

Every small donation adds up and helps children in remote Communities access and create books, including books in First Languages.

Stitching Stories with Local Artist Eleesa Howard...

On Wednesday 29 July, our Year 11 Visual Art students had the exciting opportunity to work alongside Mornington Peninsula artist Eleesa Howard, exploring the creative possibilities of embroidery, soft sculpture, and contemporary fibre arts.

During the workshop, students moved beyond traditional drawing and painting, experimenting with stitching, fabric, and texture to create expressive artworks.

Students were praised for their enthusiasm and willingness to embrace new challenges. Eleesa was so impressed by how our students jumped straight into the stitching and really thought about what they were making. She said it was lovely to see the different directions they each took, the outcomes were all so unique.

Bronze medal at the SIS Teen Chef competition..

The annual Southern Independent Schools (SIS) Teen Chef competition was held last Thursday 30 July at John Paul College in Frankston.

A culinary event for secondary students across members schools in Victoria, teams prepare a range of creative main and dessert dishes which are evaluated by professional chefs from the Australian Culinary Federation.

This year, the Balcombe Grammar team competed against 13 other schools from our region and scored between 70-80 out of a possible 100 points for their kitchen skills and final dishes.

We congratulate our students, Noah Finn, Louie Bryne, Iris Bocskor and Zara Dean, who represented the school with pride, performing to a high standard and enjoying the experience.

Our budding green thumbs team up at Tree Planting Day...

On Thursday 30 July, Balcombe Grammar students from Foundation to Year 9 teamed up with their Buddies to launch the first stage of our Balcombe Biodiversity Corridor Blitz.

Together, older students assisted younger students with planting indigenous species to help create a thriving habitat for local wildlife while contributing to a meaningful, long-term environmental project.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Bunnings Mornington for their generous donation of native plants, and to Ailz Pedder, Bunnings Activities Organiser, for joining us on the day. We also acknowledge the outstanding support of our Grounds Team, Mat Parsons and Jared Volfsbergs, whose expertise helped bring the project to life.

Sustainability Coordinator, Rachel Clements, said it is through authentic, hands-on experiences such as these, students have the opportunity to develop a deeper connection to the natural world and learn that every action, no matter how small, can contribute to positive change.

BGS students hit a home run with professional Japanese baseball players...

Last week, Balcombe Grammar students enjoyed an exciting and memorable baseball incursion with professional Japanese baseball players, Mr Kodai Hamaya and Mr Hiroki Goke.

Year 7 students were thrilled to learn from the talented athletes as they demonstrated a range of impressive baseball skills, techniques and tricks. Throughout the sessions, everyone had the opportunity to practise their batting and fielding, with plenty of enthusiasm, laughter and friendly competition on display.

Kodai, a professional pitcher, amazed students with the speed, power and accuracy of his throws. Watching his skills in action and hearing about his journey as a professional athlete provided a truly inspiring experience for our students.

The visit extended beyond the sporting field, with Hiroki and Kodai also spending time with our Year 10 Japanese classes. Students had the chance to ask questions in Japanese and engage in authentic conversations about life, sport and culture in Japan. These valuable interactions helped students build their language skills while gaining unique insights into the world of professional baseball.

Although the weather delivered a typical winter's day, it certainly did not dampen spirits. The incursion was a tremendous success, providing students with a wonderful blend of sport, language and cultural learning.

We sincerely thank Mr Hamaya and Mr Goke for sharing their expertise and enthusiasm with our students. Their visit was both inspiring and unforgettable, and one that our students will remember.

Students up for a debate at the annual SIS Competition...

On Thursday 23 July, a strong group of debaters across Years 7-10 represented Balcombe Grammar School in the annual SIS Debating Competition. Held at Rivercrest Christian College in Clyde, students presented 2 debates per team, with one topic being unseen until their arrival on the day, encouraging them to think quickly and critically. Competing against other independent schools, our students presented high-quality and thoughtful debates, leading to the following results:

- Junior 1 Team undefeated across both debates
- Junior 2 Team secured one win from two debates
- Intermediate undefeated across both debates

We are extremely proud of our Junior 2 Team as this was their very first time formally debating.

Adding to this success, Balcombe Grammar students also won best speaker in every round they debated in. The adjudicator from the Debaters Association of Victoria, awarded best speaker to:

- Arlo Cross
- Hunter West - twice!
- Savannah Reid - twice!
- Xavier Dodd

Debating Coordinator, Taylah Dorling said this is a remarkable achievement and a testament to their preparation, teamwork and commitment.

Soaring Gymnastics Success...

Balcombe Grammar School congratulates Year 7 student, Macie, on her recent success at both the State and National gymnastics competitions.

In May, at the 2026 Senior Victorian Championships, Macie was crowned the gold medallist as well as state champion for Level 9 on floor. She also came second on vault and third all around in the state for Level 9 Division 1 (under 13).

Her achievements, at this level, qualified Macie to be one of five girls to represent Victoria at the Australian Gymnastics Championships, recently held in Sydney. The Victorian team came second winning a silver medal and Macie finished in the top 10 in Australia for Level 9 (under 13) - an extraordinary achievement.

MYC Gymnastics said the girls did fantastic and gained so much competition experience, putting in some new difficult skills, gaining personal bests, as well as enjoying the opportunity to represent their state with pride.

We know that a place in the National competition is the result of the many hours of training, practice and preparation, we wish Macie every success as she continues to compete at an elite level.

Local chefs share their expertise with our young cooks...

At the end of Term 2, we welcomed guest chefs Oliver Fulljames from Peninsula Hot Springs, Loic Duchett from French bistro/café Portsea and Briggite Hafner from Tedesca Osteria Red Hill, to provide guidance and help judge our House ‘Teen Chef’ competition.

Based on the theme ‘nostalgic with a modern twist’ students were challenged to create both a main course and a dessert. They produced a variety of ambitious dishes, including shepherd’s pie, carrot cake, Biscoff lamington, Mexican-inspired parmigiana, deconstructed lemon meringue pie, confit byaldi, and rosemary potato focaccia.

All students embraced the opportunity to showcase their skills and passion for food. We congratulate Louie Byrne, Noah Finn, Iris Bocksor and Zara Dean, who will represent the school at the SIS Teen Chef competition in Term 3.
