🌟MEET CHLOE – CCA’S TRAINING AND COMPLIANCE MANAGER 🌟

Custom Care & Accommodation is delighted to introduce the newest member of our management team, Chloe, who has recently stepped into the role of Training and Compliance Officer.

Chloe is currently a third-year nursing student completing her final semester. Her nursing studies, combined with her experience in disability support, have strengthened her knowledge of person-centred care, health and safety, medication practices, risk management and quality service delivery.

Before joining CCA, Chloe worked as a Disability Support Worker. She has now been part of the CCA team for over a year as a House Manager, developing a strong understanding of our participants’ individual needs, frontline service delivery and the daily responsibilities of our support teams.

In her new role, Chloe will help ensure our staff receive the training, guidance and support they need to continue providing safe, consistent and high-quality services.

We are excited to see Chloe continue developing within CCA and know that her practical experience, clinical knowledge and commitment to our participants will make her a valuable addition to our management team.

Over the past week, my family and I have experienced firsthand just how overwhelming and difficult it can be to secure permanent residential aged care.

Between navigating My Aged Care, understanding approvals and accommodation costs, contacting countless facilities, completing applications and continually following up, families are left trying to manage an incredibly complicated system during what is already an emotional and stressful time.

It becomes even more difficult when the person has dementia, complex support needs or is assessed as fully supported and unable to pay a RAD.

This experience has made me question whether there is a need across Newcastle, Maitland and the wider Hunter for an independent aged-care placement and navigation service—someone who can work alongside families, help prepare applications, contact suitable facilities, follow up vacancies and coordinate the process from beginning to end.

If developed, this would be an entirely separate and independent business from Custom Care & Accommodation. It would not provide direct care or influence where someone chooses to live. Its purpose would simply be to help families understand the process, explore suitable options and feel supported while making their own decisions.

At this stage, I’m not launching anything. I’m genuinely trying to understand whether other families have faced similar difficulties and whether this type of practical support would be valuable.

• Did you feel supported and properly informed?
• Would having one experienced person coordinate the process have helped?

Not just getting out.

Taking part.

Community access should never be about filling hours or deciding where someone will go without them.

It should begin with the person:

What interests them?
Where do they feel connected?
What would they like to choose, learn or experience?

Sometimes that means visiting a local market, selecting what to buy and speaking with familiar stallholders.

Other times, it might mean returning to a favourite place, joining a community group, exploring a new interest or building the confidence to do more independently.

The support worker should not become the centre of the experience.

Their role is to create the right conditions for the participant to make decisions, develop connections and take an active role in their own community.

At Custom Care & Accommodation, community access is led by the individual—not the roster, the routine or the convenience of the service.

Because participation means more than being present.

It means having a voice, making choices and genuinely belonging.

A well-maintained property is not only about appearance. It can make home safer, more accessible and easier to enjoy.

Custom Care & Accommodation provides:

Our lawn and property services are available to NDIS participants and the general public.

CCA also provides SIL accommodation, community access and dementia-specific support—bringing practical assistance and specialist care together under one trusted local team.

Transitions should happen with a person.

Not to them.

Moving into a new home is significant for anyone.

For a person living with dementia, unfamiliar surroundings, different routines and new people may create uncertainty, distress or withdrawal—particularly when change happens too quickly.

A quality transition is more than selecting a moving date.

It may begin with a short visit.

Then sharing a familiar meal.

Spending an afternoon in the new environment.

Choosing personal belongings for the room.

Gradually introducing evenings and overnight stays when the person appears comfortable and ready.

Throughout the process, the person’s responses should guide what happens next.

Families, support workers and allied-health professionals may all contribute—but the transition must remain centred on the individual, their routines and their sense of safety.

At Custom Care & Accommodation, we believe transitions should be gradual, flexible and shaped around the person.

The goal is not simply to complete a move.

It is to help someone develop familiarity, confidence and a genuine sense of belonging in their new home.

Choice lives in the small moments.

It is choosing what to wear.

Which flowers to take home.

Where to stop for coffee.

What music to play.

Whether to join an activity—or do something entirely different.

Choice and control should not exist only in planning meetings, assessments or documents.

It should be visible throughout a person’s day.

For someone living with dementia, communicating a decision may take more time or look different. That does not make the choice less important.

Quality support means slowing down, offering clear options, noticing verbal and non-verbal communication and resisting the temptation to decide simply because it is quicker.

The worker’s role is not to take over.

It is to create the time, information and confidence a person needs to remain involved in their own life.

At Custom Care & Accommodation, person-led support is not an occasional approach.

It is a standard we are continuing to strengthen in every shift and every interaction.

Because the smallest choices often say the most about dignity, identity and independence.

Dementia support is skilled work.

Kindness matters—but kindness alone is not enough.

Quality dementia support requires workers who understand how changes in the brain can affect communication, memory, perception, movement, emotions and the way a person experiences their environment.

It requires knowing when to slow down.

When to use fewer words.

When one calm voice is more effective than several instructions.

When behaviour may be communicating pain, fear, confusion, overstimulation or an unmet need.

Most importantly, it requires workers to know the person—not simply the diagnosis.

Today, Custom Care & Accommodation commences its internal dementia professional-development program.

This is not training for the sake of ticking a box.

It is an ongoing commitment to reflection, stronger practice and giving our workforce the knowledge to respond with greater confidence, consistency and purpose.

Because dementia-specific support should never be based on guesswork.

It should be informed, person-led and skilled.

Goals don’t always look like paperwork.

Sometimes they look like a basket of freshly picked oranges.

A guitar brought along because music creates connection.

Choosing where to stop for coffee.

Trying something unfamiliar.

Spending time outdoors, participating in the community or rediscovering an interest that still brings purpose.

Documentation matters. It helps record progress, identify what is working and demonstrate how supports connect with a participant’s goals.

But the outcome does not happen on the form.

It happens in everyday life.

At Custom Care & Accommodation, we are strengthening how activities are planned, delivered and documented—so they are not simply outings that fill time.

They are opportunities to build confidence, maintain skills, exercise choice and create genuine moments of achievement.

That is what capacity building can look like.

That is the positive NDIS story worth sharing.

A vacancy is a room.

A home is the right match.

Supported accommodation should never begin with filling an empty bed. It should begin with understanding the person.

Who are they?

What routines help them feel settled?

What brings meaning to their day?

What environment will support their independence, identity and sense of belonging?

For a person living with dementia, the right match matters deeply. Familiarity, compatible housemates, consistent staff approaches and a home shaped around the person can make an enormous difference to everyday life.

Custom Care & Accommodation currently has capacity to welcome new participants across Maitland, Newcastle and the Hunter region.

But our focus is not filling vacancies quickly.

We take the time to consider each person’s support needs, routines, goals, personality and compatibility with the home.

Because providing a room is not enough.

The goal is to create somewhere a person can genuinely belong.
