Your P&L says the business made a profit.

Then you check the bank account and think, where's all the cash gone?

It can feel as though the numbers are contradicting each other. Usually, they're answering different questions.

Money may still be sitting in unpaid invoices. Expenses and payments can show up in different months. Cash may have gone towards a loan, equipment, owner drawings or the costs of growing the business before the return arrives.

That doesn't automatically mean the reports are wrong, and it doesn't mean you're bad with money. It means your P&L and bank account each show one part of the story.

You open your profit and loss statement.

You recognise the numbers, but you still can’t answer the question:

What is this actually telling me about my business?

That doesn’t mean you’re bad with money. It means no one has shown you how to read it.

Your profit and loss statement tells you whether your business recorded a profit or loss over a chosen period. It doesn’t tell you everything about your cash, your tax position or what you can safely afford to spend.

Start by checking:

- the period and accounting basis
- your revenue, direct costs, operating expenses and net profit
- what changed from a comparable period
- what needs checking before you act on the number

You don’t need to become an accountant. But you need a clear starting point and definitely better questions.

After 30 years working with business numbers, I know how much easier they are to use when someone explains them in plain English.

This one hit different.

A client told her money coach a story on our last episode, and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

She found 67 dresses scattered through her daughter's room, on the floor, stuffed in the closet. Only 17 had ever been worn. The rest still had the tags on. She had no idea she'd spent that much, not until she saw it all laid out in front of her.

Here's the thing, this isn't really about dresses. It's about how easy it is to spend without ever really seeing what we're spending, especially when life is busy, stressful, or you're going through something big like a separation.

"What am I actually spending, not what I think I'm spending."

That line alone is worth sitting with.

For years, it felt like we were living paycheque to paycheque…. Because we actually were

The money was there…

but it seemed to disappear in a heartbeat.

Every time I thought we were finally getting on top of things,

Another bill or something unexpected would happen & we’d be right back where we started.

Round and round we’d go! A never-ending battle.

And because I was the accountant (the one who was supposed to be good with money) I felt responsible.

But instead I was pretty embarrassed really

But feeling ashamed and pretending it was fine, didn’t really help me change anything.

What I needed to do was swallow my pride (and my ego) and ask for help.

I needed to be realistic, look at what was happening and then set some ground rules.

Only then could we start to make different decisions.

Not perfect decisions. But still forward decisions.
