Inspiring future female scientists through cetacean science.

Science and STEM workshops designed for female secondary students and held on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island. Cetacean Sisters is a unique opportunity for Secondary School students to connect with other like-minded girls. The program aims to advance the scientific skills and knowledge of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) of the participants. Our workshops offer interactive and

practical experiences designed to deepen each participant’s understanding of the cetaceans that may be observed locally and the science behind studying the species. All sessions are led by a passionate local cetacean scientist and experienced teacher, Dr. Sue Mason. Sue is eager to share their scientific expertise and along with her experienced marine scientist colleagues, their career paths to guide the next generation of scientists.

Every whale and dolphin sighting matters—but where you report it matters too.

Sharing sightings on social media is a fantastic way to celebrate our incredible local marine wildlife. But if you want your sighting to contribute to conservation, report it through one of these citizen science platforms:

🐋 Humpback whale fluke photos → HappyWhale�https://happywhale.com/home

🐋 Southern right whale photos (especially head and callosity images) → Whale Face�https://whaleface.swifft.net.au/

🐬 Whale and dolphin sightings → iNaturalist (photos are encouraged so the species can be verified)�https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/

These records become part of the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), where they are publicly available and can be accessed by researchers, environmental managers, consultants, government agencies and the wider community.

Publicly accessible biodiversity records help inform research, environmental assessments and conservation planning. Every verified sighting adds another piece to the marine biodiversity puzzle.

When you see a whale or dolphin:
📸 Take a photo.�
📍 Record the location.�
🗓️ Note the date and time.�
🌊 Upload your sighting.

Your uploaded and validated observation can be valuable data that help us to understand our local whales and dolphin populations.

Curious about what is is like to be a marine scientist?
