Remember how the presenters on Playschool would chat about a book before and during reading? Book-talk encourages interest, builds reading behaviours and boosts comprehension. Next time you read to a child, try asking things like:
• Would you like to choose a book you know, or a new book?
• Would you like a made-up story, or a book about real facts today?
• Look at the cover – what do you think this one is about?
• What is his/her face telling us?
• What do you think is going to happen next?
• What was your favourite part of the book?
• Who was your favourite character? What did you like about them?
• If you wanted to change the ending of the book to something different, what could have happened instead?
