Say hello to Cape Bauer Oysters! Louis Robinson and his team have been cultivating Pacific oysters on the Eyre Peninsula for nearly three years. Located in Streaky Bay, where the desert meets the sea and the fish are aplenty, the farm produces more than 20,000 dozen Pacific oysters annually for the domestic market.

On a 5-hectare intertidal lease in a growing area referred to as "Hummocks", Louis and his team have been raising oysters from 6mm seed through to harvest, along with receiving complementary on-grower inputs from other South Australian farms. Louis's lease site, positioned to the north of a sandy peninsula known as Point Gibson, is exposed to the winter storms that roll in from the north and well protected from southerly winds during the summer months. Farming on the edge of the ocean means these oysters are grown in a high-flow, nutrient-rich area with large exchanges of water. The oysters are grown out on adjustable longlines utilising a range of oyster baskets to get the job done.

Louis's journey into the world of oysters began with a research role at Australian Seafood Industries (ASI). This experience not only connected him with other South Australian oyster farmers but also instilled in him a deep appreciation for the oysters he now cultivates. His time on the water has led to many unforgettable encounters with local wildlife, including playful dolphins, inquisitive seals, and majestic ospreys.

Looking ahead, Louis is optimistic about the future of the oyster industry. He firmly believes in supporting his fellow oyster farmers and the industry as a whole. Louis is confident that mechanisation, research, and stringent food safety standards will pave the way for growth and increased productivity for all oyster farmers. He proudly states, "Australia has a fantastic reputation for its cleanliness and strict food regulations. For this reason, we have developed a strong reputation for quality food products. I believe it is important we use this to our advantage moving forward."

Cape Bauer Oysters not only caters to the domestic wholesale market and select restaurants but also offers a unique opportunity for direct-to-consumer sales. If you're in the area and eager to experience the taste of the Eyre Peninsula, Louis and his team are just a message away on the Cape Bauer Oysters Instagram page. By supporting Cape Bauer Oysters, you're not just enjoying exceptional oysters, but also supporting small businesses and family-run operations across regional Australia.
