Our MontiU Dragon Boat Festival Family Event has come to a beautiful end.
It was such a warm afternoon filled with familiar faces, new families, laughter, and hands-on cultural experiences.
Many children who have already graduated from MontiU came back to visit us. Seeing them run in, give us big hugs, and call out “Liu Laoshi” and “Xiaoyu Laoshi” was truly touching.
Together, we made zongzi, created colourful bracelets, made traditional herbal plaques, played ring toss, tried the “shooting the five poisons” game, and even “rowed dragon boats” together.
For young children, culture is not something they only learn from books. It is something they touch, smell, make, taste, and experience with the people they love.
A big thank you to all the families who joined us today, including those who travelled from far away. Thank you also to LingoAce for the lovely gifts, and to our wonderful face painting artist for bringing so much joy to the children.
We are grateful to celebrate Chinese traditions with our MontiU community here in Melbourne.
艾香端午,亲子同乐。
See you again next year.

Why do we keep the environment calm?
Because young children don’t need constant noise to be engaged.
A calm environment does not mean children are forced to be quiet.
It means the space is prepared so children can hear themselves think.
They can notice what they are doing.
They can follow their own interest.
They can concentrate without being pulled in every direction.
In a Montessori environment, we try not to overstimulate the child.
Not everything needs to flash, sing, shout, or entertain.
Sometimes, a child needs space to pour water slowly.
To peel a banana carefully.
To watch another child work.
To repeat the same movement again and again.
Calm is not empty.
Calm is where deep attention begins. ✨

Why are the materials arranged from left to right?
Because even the way a tray is prepared has a purpose.
In a Montessori environment, many activities are arranged from left to right, and often from simple to more complex.
This small detail quietly supports the child’s sense of order.
They learn where to begin.
What comes next.
How to complete a sequence.
How to return things to where they belong.
For young children, order is not just about being tidy.
Order helps them feel secure.
It helps their hands and mind work together.
It helps them understand the steps of a task without needing constant adult instructions.
And over time, this left-to-right movement also gently prepares the child for reading and writing.
At MMCH, we believe the environment should speak clearly to the child.
Sometimes, the tray itself is quietly saying:
“Start here.”
“Move this way.”
“You can do this.” ✨

Why do children wear aprons?
Because an apron is more than just something to keep clothes clean.
In a Montessori environment, putting on an apron helps the child prepare for real work.
It gives a quiet message:
“I am about to begin.”
“My hands will be busy.”
“This work needs care.”
Whether a child is washing, baking, pouring, painting, or preparing food, the apron becomes part of the routine.
They learn to pause.
To get ready.
To take responsibility for the work they are choosing.
And when the work is finished, they take the apron off and return it to its place.
A small habit.
A simple routine.
But for a young child, it builds order, independence, and respect for the work they do. ✨

Why is there only one set of each activity?
Because waiting is also part of the work.
In many Montessori environments, you will often see only one set of each activity on the shelf.
At first, this may feel unusual.
But it gives children a very real social experience:
“I want to use this, but someone else is using it now.”
This is where patience begins.
This is where respect begins.
This is where children slowly learn that other people have needs too.
They may watch.
They may wait.
They may choose something else.
They may come back later.
Over time, children begin to understand:
“This work is not available right now.”
“I can wait for my turn.”
“I can respect another child’s concentration.”
In Montessori, we don’t teach sharing by forcing children to give something up halfway.
We protect each child’s deep focus, while gently helping others learn to wait.
One activity.
One child.
One turn at a time.
Such a small detail, but it carries a big lesson in community life. ✨

Why do we use real bowls and cups?
Because children deserve real experiences.
In a Montessori environment, we don’t give children plastic versions of life when they are ready to handle the real thing.
A real bowl has weight.
A real cup needs care.
A real spoon makes a sound when it touches the plate.
These small details help children slow down, pay attention, and become more aware of their movements.
Of course, the items are carefully chosen:
small,
child-sized,
easy to hold,
and used with adult guidance nearby.
But when children use real things, they begin to understand real responsibility.
They learn to carry with two hands.
They learn to pour with care.
They learn that objects can be beautiful, useful, and fragile.
And very often, children become more careful when we trust them with something real.
At MMCH, we don’t use real bowls and cups to make life harder.
We use them because children are capable of so much more than we sometimes imagine. ✨

Why are the shelves so low at MMCH?
Because the environment is prepared for the child, not for the adult.
When shelves are low, children can see what is available.
They can choose their own work.
They can carry it carefully to a table or mat.
And when they are finished, they can return it to its place.
It may look like a small design detail.
But for a young child, it quietly says:
“You can choose.”
“You can reach.”
“You can take care of this space.”
“You belong here.”
In a Montessori environment, independence does not begin with big lessons.
Sometimes, it begins with a shelf that is just the right height. ✨

Why do children carry their own chairs?
Because carrying a chair is not just “moving furniture.”
For a young child, it takes balance.
Body control.
Strength.
Coordination.
And awareness of the space and people around them.
They learn to slow down.
To look where they are going.
To use both hands.
To notice, “Is there someone beside me?”
But there is something deeper happening too.
When children are allowed to move and care for the things in their environment, they begin to feel:
“This is my space.”
“I belong here.”
“I can take care of it.”
At MMCH, even the smallest everyday actions are part of helping children build independence, responsibility, and respect for the world around them. ✨
