Sustainable Water Monash, Monash (2026)

Monash Solar Water Team is a student led team engaging in the production of a portable solar powered water purification system. Our mission is to provide low-cost, low-maintenance and a sustainable desalination system for use in rural areas with little to no access to clean water. We aim to raise awareness to the social issues of clean water and sanitation in remote areas, and the potential of renewable water management solutions. With a focus on continual improvement, we design, manufacture, test and modify the water purification prototype, in consultation with Monash Chemical Engineering Faculty and Monash Sustainable Development Institute.

Recruit Spotlight: Greywater Design Challenge 💧

Greywater isn't just "used water" waiting to be reused - it carries salts, boron, soap residue, and fabric particles that can clog filtration systems and reduce water quality if not properly treated. Add in peak morning and evening water flows, and you've got a real engineering challenge.

This recruit group spent the semester designing a solution: a vertical flow sand and gravel filter, built in four purpose-chosen layers - mulch, loamy sand, coarse sand, and fine gravel - each selected for a specific reason, from affordability to proven stormwater filtration performance.

They didn't just design a filter - they scoped the whole system against the Australian Standard (AS 1546.4), clearly defining what was in scope (irrigation-level filtration, water tank, cost estimates) and what wasn't (drinking water, dark greywater from kitchens and dishwashers) - grounding the whole project in real regulation, not just good intentions.

Swipe through to see how they tackled it 👉

Congratulations to Group 2 for the rigour, care, and hard work behind this project 🌊

Recruit Spotlight: Community Drinking Water Challenge 💧

Remote villages across Peninsular Malaysia face real barriers to safe drinking water - seasonal rainfall, natural hazards, difficult terrain, and limited treatment infrastructure. This is the challenge our first recruit group took on this semester.

Their answer? The CCC Framework - Collection, Containment, Consumption - a practical, community-first system built around what’s actually available on the ground.

Swipe through to see how they tackled it 👉
🔆 Solar towers + hydro turbines for power
🧪 Filtration and purification using sustainable, low-cost materials
⚖️ A full triple bottom line analysis - weighing economic, social, and environmental impact
🔧 An integrated system pulling it all together, end to end

Huge congratulations to Group 1 for the hard work, research, and care they poured into this project all semester 🌊
