Impact carries more weight than intent. And when there's a gap between what you mean and what the other person experiences, it can cause more harm than we expect.

This gap can appear when:
🔵 Your words don't match your tone.
🔵 Your body language is inconsistent with your message.
🔵 You're unaware of how people view you.

When communication goes wrong, it's common to immediately defend your intent. 'That's not what I meant!'. Although this may feel like the right answer, it often invalidates the person's feelings and makes conflict resolution much harder. 💬

Closing the gap by acknowledging how your actions affect others can help enhance leadership skills within teams and improve customer experiences.

Don't get too hung up on the phrase 'the customer's always right!' ✅
The meaning is not what you think. It's not in its words; it's the inferred meaning and understanding.

Yes, the customer is important, which means they need to be treated with a high level of respect and value, even if they are deeply wrong. This can be challenging when customers are angry or aggressive.

So what can we do when the customer’s not right and may be mistreating frontline staff? How would you handle these interactions?

In our blog (linked below) we explore our favourite three-point strategy to manage these situations. ⬇️

Something as simple as one too many spelling errors in a digital message can impact communication more than you realise.

Especially in remote and hybrid teams when there isn't that spontaneous collaboration you get in person.

Unnecessary confusion and constant back-and-forth messaging feed miscommunication and decrease productivity by needing more time to read, digest, and respond to unclear messages. 📱

The good news is that you can reduce or eliminate some of these communications issues in your teams. In our blog (linked below), we share our favourite techniques to improve communication in hybrid and remote teams. 💻⬇️

Without utilising the best defusing techniques for a situation, you could find that those negative feelings can snowball. This is when a vent turns to a rant.

David shares how important it is to use valuable communication techniques to successfully identify when this is happening in clients. He also touches on the value of having tools to pull from to help de-escalate situations before they explode.

The growing return-to-office policies further show that companies and employees value hybrid flexibility. But that means the way we manage employee performance needs change too.

Here's how:
📝 Revisit performance goals: Ensure you regularly check in with the team to align goals and manage expectations. Make it work with the cadence of your team. Is it weekly, fortnightly, or monthly?

💬 Don't ditch 1:1s. Just because you're both not in the office doesn't mean you skip the one-on-one that week. Regular and casual check-ins are vital in hybrid workplaces to help detect isolation, prevent blocks, and encourage your team.

💻 Master digital communication: Creating clear and consistent communication expectations for your team allows for smoother internal and external exchanges. This extends to digital tools. Take advantage of project management systems and workflows to enhance your team's work.

✍️ Identify and support skills gaps. Find ways to support your staff and take their skills to the next level. Whether that's through on-the-job training, mentoring, or external training providers.

Having an open-door policy is great, unless you're not actually proving you can be approachable.

Building trust through empathetic leadership and genuinely being available when staff need to chat is the first step in creating a culture that lowers psychosocial risk.

In our blog, linked below, we discuss why empathy is so important in the workplace and share some practical tips to make it work.

We're delighted to share our thoughts on one of our most recent sessions on working in high-performing teams with a returning client, Club Marine. Club Marine continues to invest in growth, helping their teams provide the best support to Australian boaties.

Many teams and businesses conduct employee performance reviews at the end of the financial year (EOFY), and that can commonly be the beginning and end of performance conversations.

However, building a consistent performance and professional development strategy in the workplace is not just for EOFY.

And so, we wanted to take a moment to highlight Club Marine as one of our clients doing just that. This training is just one of the valuable sessions we have delivered so far this year, and we look forward to continuing to support this team's growth.

Navigating hybrid work, constantly changing tech demands, and fast-paced tasks is a challenge. So it's no surprise we can lose focus every now and again. But you can pull your focus back!

🎯The key is a laser-focus principle.
It's like a GPS; if you miss a turn, the GPS will kindly guide you back on track. 🗺️

📋It's the same for prioritising tasks.
Making a clear to-do list in priority order that also gives you the ability to adapt to unique daily challenges is vital for focus. That way you don't get caught in the details and can complete your tasks while maintaining the concentration and energy you need to get stuff done. ✅
