In celebrating International Women's Day 2023, we'd like to say thank you to all women and gender diverse people making strides in their field and being positive role models for the next generation. Our hard working and incredible volunteers all over the world make this happen by running innovative workshops connecting to industries and schools. The number of women seen in engineering and STEM has seen a steady incline over the last few years. Worldwide only 17% of engineers are women. This is an improvement from about 10% in 2010, thus there is hope that the representation of women will continue upwards and bring about positive change in STEM fields!

In 2008, a The University of Melbourne student Marita Cheng and her peers had a mission to bridge to gap between girls and boys when it comes engagement in STEM. An idea stemmed from her professor to teach robotics in a local school. After initial success, the first Robogals chapter was established at her university.

14 years later, one Robogals chapter expanded into over 35 chapters around the world and continue to grow. New projects have been developed all over the world including rural trips to remote schools, the Robogals Science Challenge, hackathons targetted to secondary school students and more.
Robogals would not be possible without it’s ongoing support from our community of volunteers and sponsors. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved with us throughout the years and encourage your participation into the future.

Happy ! 🦾

We're thrilled to have got in touch with Marita Cheng to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day. Marita founded Robogals, a global organisation that inspires girls about engineering careers by teaching girls robotics.

For her work with Robogals, she was named the 2012 Young Australian of the Year and received an Asia Society Game Changer Award at the United Nations. Marita then founded Aipoly, creating AI technology for the blind, winning a CES Best of Innovation Award two years in a row!

Named one of Forbes World’s Top 50 Women in Tech and the youngest Member of the Order of Australia, please join me in welcoming Marita Cheng!

What drove you to establish Robogals?
"I started Robogals to increase the number of girls in my engineering classes at university and to increase the number of women in engineering in the workforce"

How do we get more women more interested in engineering?
"Show women how they can change the world with engineering! And impact millions of lives! It's a fun, exciting and rewarding career"

Brought to you by the Accelerator for Enterprising Girls & Women - an initiative funded by the Australian Government.

The third value is Integrity! 🤝

Integrity is one of the core values of Robogals.
Without the integrity of all of our Robogals volunteers, we would not be able thrive in achieving our goals and projects. From the workshop volunteers to the executive teams, Robogals members have a genuine care and pride in organising workshops and developing events and initiatives. For that to work, volunteers believe in the Robogals mission which is to spread the joy of STEM to the next generation.

As an organisation Robogals works to fulfil its vision of building a culture of global diversity and inclusion in engineering. 🤞

In our latest blog, we sat down with Raksha Rvs, a Monash University student studying mechatronics engineering.

Raksha only discovered her passion for AI (Artificial Intelligence) after high school, because it was never encouraged for young girls to pursue technical fields.

So she finds her work in Robogals Monash very important to her, because "for a career in STEM, it's best to create a foundation in middle school."

Find Raksha's full story here or find us on Instagram https://robogals.org/peopleofrobogals-raksha-ramprasad-venkata-suvarna/.

If you missed the ✨Two Bulls International Women's Day event✨, we wanted to share the recording of the session, which includes some really interesting insights from not only our Two Bulls team panelist, but also guest speaker, Sam Yee, who is the Chief Product Officer at Aura.

During the chat this week, we talked all things around bias and how these amazing women have encountered it and overcome it throughout their careers. ♀️

We hope you enjoy it and can take something away that inspires you to not only break any bias you may have, but helps you challenge any bias you see in your everyday life!

Congratulations to Chloe Thai, this year’s Legend of Robogals!

Chloe was described by her nominator as a ray of sunshine in the midst of a storm. As Melbourne entered their second lockdown last year, Chloe realized the potential of online workshops in reaching out to schools in and outside Melbourne. Through partnerships with other organisations and work within Robogals Melbourne, she led the chapter to reach more than 650 students across Victoria. When lockdown lifted, Chloe charted a course that ensured the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of volunteers while returning to in person school visits.

Through all this, Chloe was proud of her team’s ability to thrive despite change: “I am most proud of how my team and I were able to navigate prolonged lockdowns and implement new and innovative ideas despite all the uncertainties and ups and downs we went through.”

Robogals is proud to call Chloe our 2021 Legend of Robogals, and is more than excited that she is continuing with us as the new Robogals APAC Chapter Support Director!
