MSA Athlete of the Decade – Gronya Somerville 🏆

To help celebrate our first 20 years, we named our Athletes of the Decade for 2017–2026 at a recent gala function!

Gronya started her MSA journey back in 2010 as a Year 9 Student-Athlete, graduating in 2013. Since taking her talent to the global court, her record speaks for itself:

MSA Athlete of the Decade – Touk Miller 🏆

Touk’s MSA journey began as a Year 7 Student-Athlete back in 2008. Along the way, he made his senior debut for the Maribyrnong Park Lions at just 15 years old, before stepping onto the AFL stage in 2014 when the Gold Coast SUNS selected him with pick 29 in the draft. His debut was Round 1 2015.

Since then, his accolades speak for themselves:

Gold Coast SUNS Captain (3 years)

2× All-Australian

2× SUNS Club Champion

AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year (2022)

With Touk recently re-signing with the SUNS for a further 4 years, he is on track to become the first MSA student to play 300 AFL Games. We wish him all the best for the rest of his career! 💛☀️

MSA Celebrates 20 Years! 🎉🏆

Recently, Maribyrnong Sports Academy celebrated its 20th Anniversary in style at the Western Grounds function centre at Whitten Oval.

It was an unforgettable night filled with current and former staff and students, coming together to honor our Athletes of the Decade and celebrate our history. From humble sporting facilities in 2007 to our world-class setup today in 2026, the College and Academy have evolved tremendously—and all for the better.

Here’s to the next decade of shaping the future of Australian sport! 🇦🇺💪

College Commitment Announcement 🏀

Congratulations to Maribyrnong Sports Academy’s own Lily-Anne McClure (Yr 12) on committing to Holy Cross College in Massachusetts to play NCAA Division 1 basketball!

Lily-Anne’s commitment follows a standout campaign at the AUSA tournament. As luck would have it, the tour stayed right next door to Holy Cross, giving Lily-Anne the opportunity to explore the campus firsthand and see where her basketball journey is taking her next.

We look forward to supporting Lily-Anne through the remainder of her VCE studies before she embarks on her 4-year journey in the US. Congratulations, Lily-Anne! 🙌

🏉 AFLW Round 1 Wrap-Up! 🏉

Round 1 is in the books, and it was incredible watching our MSA Alumni dominate across the league! Here are some of the standout performances from the weekend:

🔥 Richmond: Monique Conti (26 disposals) & Sierra Grieves (24 disposals) led the Tigers to a strong victory over Collingwood! Sierra earning a Telstra Rising Star nomination for her performance
⭐ St Kilda: Georgie Patrikios shone as one of the Saints' best in a tough battle against Carlton.
🦘 North Melbourne: Libby Birch and the Kangaroos notched a dominant win over Geelong.
🐶 Western Bulldogs: Jess Fitzgerald put on a masterclass with 30 disposals to secure the win!

MSA is Celebrating 20 Years!

To mark this significant milestone, MSA has planned a series of events throughout the year for former staff, alumni and current students.

The first event is our 20th Anniversary Dinner, to be held on 26 August 2026, bringing together former staff, Department staff and others who have played an important role in the development and success of MSA. The evening will also celebrate MSA's highest-achieving alumni with the naming of ‘Athletes of the Second Decade’.

Despite our best efforts, some former staff may have been missed due to incomplete or outdated contact information. If you have not received an invitation to the Anniversary Dinner and would like to attend, please contact us.

Additional celebrations, including a dedicated Alumni Event, will follow later in the year, with details to be announced soon.

🏉💚💛 Congratulations to our amazing MSA student-athletes who proudly represented Victoria at the School Sport Australia U15 Girls AFL National Championships in Melbourne last week!

It was fantastic to see six of our student-athletes earn selection to represent their state, with all of them playing an important role throughout the week.

💙 Vic Navy enjoyed an outstanding tournament, finishing undefeated at the top of their pool with an impressive 5 wins from 5 games!

🤍 Vic White also had a terrific campaign, winning 3 of their 5 matches and competing strongly against the best young footballers from across Australia.

Congratulations Sarah. What a great honour.

Congratulations to Sarah Mollison, Australia’s recipient of the World Lacrosse Heart of Lacrosse Award.

This award honours individuals who display exceptional character, dedication, and selfless contribution to the international lacrosse community.

Tokyo was Sarah’s sixth Senior World Championship campaign, an international career spanning more than two decades. She was one of the youngest members of Australia’s 2005 gold medal winning team, and is now one of the most experienced players to ever pull on the green & gold.

Beyond the national program, Sarah has poured just as much into the game off the field, coaching underage and representative squads and mentoring the next generation.

Congratulations Sarah.

Danny Vojnikovich has placed fifth in the men’s -90kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after an absolute thriller of a match.

Facing home-crowd favourite Scott Cusack of Scotland, the 21-year-old fought through regular time under a deafening roar from the local fans.🥋

The Breakdown, Golden Score Battle: The exhausting bout pushed deep into extra time, lasting nearly six minutes.
Narrow Margin: Danny missed out on the podium after accumulating one too many penalties in the final moments.
Elite Effort: A massive achievement to secure a top-5 finish on the world stage.We are incredibly proud of your grit, determination, and amazing effort, Danny! 🇦🇺👏
