National Sorry Day – Reflecting, Listening and Learning Together

Today is National Sorry Day, a time to acknowledge and reflect on the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples affected by the Stolen Generations.

Within early childhood, National Sorry Day can be approached in gentle and age-appropriate ways that focus on kindness, compassion, belonging and respect for others.

As educators and families, we help children build understanding through the values we model every day — listening, caring for one another, including others and working together in respectful ways.

Simple ways families can acknowledge National Sorry Day
• Read stories that celebrate connection, family and belonging
• Talk about kindness, fairness and caring for others
• Spend time together reflecting on what it means to help people feel safe and included
• Explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through art, music and storytelling

Outdoor Classroom Day – Learning Beyond Four Walls

Today is Outdoor Classroom Day, a celebration of the many benefits outdoor play and learning experiences provide for children.

Outdoor environments encourage children to explore, create, problem-solve and connect with the world around them. Whether it’s climbing, digging, collecting leaves or simply sitting in the sunshine, meaningful learning often happens outside.

Spending time outdoors also supports children’s physical wellbeing, confidence, emotional regulation and creativity.

Simple ways families can get involved
• Go on a nature walk and talk about what you can see and hear
• Create outdoor art using sticks, leaves or flowers
• Read stories outside or enjoy picnic lunches together
• Encourage messy play, movement and exploration
• Allow children uninterrupted time outdoors to follow their interests
