World Rainforest Day – Connecting Children with Nature

Today is World Rainforest Day, a day dedicated to celebrating and protecting the world's rainforests and the incredible plants, animals and ecosystems they support.

Rainforests play a vital role in keeping our planet healthy. They provide homes for wildlife, help regulate our climate, produce oxygen and support biodiversity across the globe.

For children, learning about rainforests can inspire curiosity, wonder and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. Through simple experiences, families can help children develop an understanding of why caring for our environment matters.

Simple ways families can celebrate World Rainforest Day
• Explore books and documentaries about rainforests and rainforest animals
• Create rainforest-inspired artwork using natural materials
• Go on a nature walk and compare your local environment to rainforest habitats
• Listen to rainforest sounds and discuss the animals that live there
• Talk about simple ways to care for our planet, such as recycling, saving water and reducing waste

Helpful Early Years Learning Resources
• National Geographic Kids – rainforest facts and activities for children
https://kids.nationalgeographic.com
• World Rainforest Day – information and educational resources
https://www.worldrainforestday.org
• Cool Australia – sustainability and environmental learning activities

By encouraging children to explore and appreciate the natural world, we help nurture future environmental stewards who understand the importance of caring for our planet.
