📉 Year 12 Physics Participation at Record Low

The 2025 Year 12 Physics Participation Report Card ( Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute & Australian Institute of Physics ) highlights concerning trends:

+ Only 12.1% of students studied physics in Year 12 – the lowest level ever recorded.

+ Both male and female participation declined between 2015–2023.

+ Just 1 in 4 physics students are female, a ratio unchanged for many years.

Physics underpins critical skills for careers in engineering, healthcare, defence, finance, and advanced computing. A shrinking pipeline poses serious challenges for Australia’s future STEM workforce.

“It is vital that we ensure students are equipped with the foundational physics knowledge required to meet the demands across the science, engineering, and technology sectors.” – Prof. Nicole Bell, AIP
