Spanish snap shot

How good is Spanish wine?

Spain is one of my favourite wine countries because every bottle tells a story.

From salty Atlantic Albariño
to mountain-grown Garnacha and powerful Tempranillo,
these wines are full of character, sense of place and incredible value.

Authentic, delicious and made to be shared around a table.

Pubs - the biggest mistake I see pubs make with wine?

Thinking a bigger wine list equals a better wine program.

Most guests don’t want 150 confusing choices.

They want a well-curated list, staff who know the wines, and a recommendation they can trust.

A great wine program is about clarity, not complexity.

Pepe’s Italian Chalet Winter 2026.

This is why I love wine training. It’s about keeping things fresh, inspiring staff,
building confidence,
and helping people start their own wine journey.

The more engaged the team, the better the guest experience.

Excited to continue working with this great team and sharing more of what happens behind the scenes of wine education.

Friday night wine
BWS vs ALDI edition
$15 and under !!!!

(Vintage ?) Cali by Snoop Juicy Red Blend Australia
$15 BWS
VS
2019 Marques del Atrio Rioja Reserva Tempranillo Graciano Rioja, Spain
$12.99 ALDI

I picked up a bottle of Cali Red by Snoop Dogg this week because, let’s be honest, I was curious….

The wine is soft, sweet-fruited and easy drinking. It’s clearly aimed at people who are new to wine and just want something approachable. Is it a wine I’d rush back to buy? Probably not.

But here’s the thing…I don’t really enjoy tearing wines apart. If a wine gets people interested in wine, that’s a good thing.

That said, if you’re standing in Aldi with around the same budget, I’d point you towards Marques del Atrio Rioja instead. For about two dollars less, this offers staggering value …you’re getting a wine with - 5 generations of wine making, bottle age, more structure, more complexity, and food friendly and a connection to one of Spain’s classic wine regions.

Sometimes the best wine isn’t the one with the celebrity on the label
t’s the one that overdelivers for the price.

Have you tried either of them?
