Melbourne Energy Students Association - MESA

Share

Previously known as "Master of Energy Systems Association", MESA members voted to change the club name in 2016 to a more broad and inclusive name.

University of Melbourne student club for Energy Engineering and Economics, Renewable/Non-renewable Energy, Sustainable Development, Energy Policies and Law

Affiliated to GSA and UMSU The new name "Melbourne Energy Students Association" aims to be more relevant to members not enrolled within the Masters of Energy Systems degree, but with an equally relevant interest and/or field of specialisation/

Cathy Wilcox does it again!

It has been a remarkable change in messaging from the US in the last few months:
- Rejoined Paris Agreement on the first day of the Biden/Harris Administration
- 50-52% reduction on 2005 levels by 2030 (Obama Administration had 26-28% by 2025)
- $3 trillion infrastructure package
- Ambition for net-zero energy grid by 2035
- 30GW of offshore wind by 2030
- Executive Order stating climate change is both a "national security" and "foreign policy" priority
- Pause O&G drilling leases on federal lands
- Created Presidential Climate Envoy position, and appointed former Secretary of State John Kerry

Few Australian states have renewed their plans (Vic included), but there was no update to Australia's national commitments at the Biden-led Climate Summit. Australia's Paris NDC is a 26-28% drop in 2005 levels by 2030 by using carryover surplus emissions units from the Kyoto Protocol
