Rethink Refuse Reduce Reuse Share Repair Compost Recycle Be the Change

Hi, I'm Erin Rhoads - welcome to my blog about our zero waste and sustainable life in Melbourne, Australia. For the past decade I have been sharing how we reduce single-use plastic, rethink waste and buy less stuff. Along the way I learnt to eat real food, discovered new skills, cut down my exposure to some unnecessary

chemicals, found joy in moments over things, became a community activist, and simplified my life, while saving money. You'll find all the fun accessible resources we use to create our sustainable and meaningful life. There are down to earth stories, practical ideas, recipes and DIYs, on the topics of reducing waste to landfill, swapping out plastic, easy eco actions and everyday activism for collective change. I'm here to help you reduce, reuse and reconnect - without judgment. Want all of the helpful tips and tricks at home? Get my books 'Waste Not: Make a big difference by throwing away less' and 'Waste Not Everyday' at bookstores, online, as an e-book and your library. I run workshops and keynote talks on a range of sustainability topics suited to groups of all ages and locations. You can find out more via my events page. I'm always learning and sharing on my blog, via my newsletter, and here my social media. It's a joy to have you here,
Erin

National Tree Day is this weekend! I love coming together with members of my community to plant trees and then years later seeing how those trees have grown helping expand necessary habitats, especially in the city. Community tree planting is great activity to do with the kids too. Find a site near you via the website: https://nationaltreeday.org.au/find-a-site/

Last night I went to the Melbourne premiere for The Plastic Country, an Australian documentary by Kal Glanznig about the devastating impact of plastic here in our own backyard and what our nation can do to help stem the flow of plastic.

It's a beautifully made film that doesn't shy away from the realities of our plastic problem on our health and environment, while also celebrating the researchers, communities and changemakers working towards better solutions. I walked away hopeful and was reminded that every action, whether it's refusing a single-use plastic, supporting better policies or helping your community reuse more truly does adds up.

I've been talking about plastic pollution and living with less waste for over a decade. At times it can feel like we are literally swimming against a strong current. But I only had to turn my head to see a theatre filled with like minded folk and know there is a lot of great work happening, and that the tide is turning on plastic. This film is a good reminder of that and the actions we need to ramp up that change.

The post panel chat with Josh Kirkman ( for Climate), Beau Miles (Filmmaker & Outdoorsman), Cip Hamilton (Australian Marine Conservation Society), Birte Moliere (Boomerang Alliance), Colleen Hughson (Beach Patrol 3280) was invigorating and full of actions we could all take away. The number one reminder...email your MP, both State and Federal!!!

It was a treat to chat with fellow campaigners and community organisers Emily and Cip at the event.

If you get the chance to see it, I highly recommend the doco. I'm going to look into putting on a community screening on at my local cinema before our State election. Watch this space.

Big congrats to Kal Glanznig - Independent for A Ward Sutherland Shire Council on this film. Onwards and upwards with change.

As we head into the End of Financial Year, I'm thinking about the power of collective action. Living a low waste life means I spend little money buying things, and can redirect any leftover dollars into organisations doing good work. This year one of the orgs I am supporting is Just Futures Collab, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led giving circle backing Indigenous-led climate solutions that protect Country, culture and communities > https://shorturl.at/oXM74

Donations are currently being matched, meaning impact is doubled. If you've been thinking about supporting Indigenous-led climate action, now is a powerful time to get involved.

WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised this video contains images of people who have passed away and content that may be distressing.

We all recognise the recycling symbol, but there’s a new symbol to keep an eye out for: the REUSE symbol! What do you think?

This new symbol is being introduced around the world to help make reuse easier to recognise and understand.

Created through the Rebrand Reuse initiative by the Global Alliance to Advance Reuse, this new symbol was developed to give reusable packaging and refill systems a clear, consistent identity that people can recognise wherever they encounter them.

The more visible reuse becomes, the more familiar it feels. And when people know how to participate, choosing to reduce waste becomes that little bit easier. At least that's my hope for it.

So proud of Isabel and the 🙌 taking the reusables conversation to 10 Downing Street!! Never doubt the grassroots community impact we can have 😁

By design, parties offer us the opportunity for a “peak moment”. Occasions that stand apart from the everyday, that create memories we return to long after the details have faded. That’s what makes parties so special.

I have been incredibly fortunate that my work with Party Kit Network has given me many peak moments, with today’s being a visit to Number 11 Downing Street!

Following Party Kit Network’s shortlisting for The Small Awards, I was invited to a reception with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt. Hon Rachel Reeves MP and the team from Small Business Britain.

The most surreal moment on my party kit journey so far!

Thank you for joining me for this journey,
Isabel x

I’m so excited to share what Australian Library of Things Network has got planned for this year’s LoTs Summit in Sydney. It’s going to be such a fun couple of days.

1 August — Workshops + LoTFEST at Canva Space, Surry Hills
They'll be taking over the incredible Canva Space for a day packed with interactive workshops, collaboration, big ideas, and plenty of chances to connect with other passionate LoTs folks.

They will also have a special guest appearance from Gene Hominicki, founder of MyTurn lending software, sharing insights and stories from the world of sharing and lending libraries.

And then… LoTFEST! 🎉
Celebrate everything to love about Libraries of Things with good food, drinks, music, and some very fun surprises. Keep your eyes peeled for a few special guests too.

2 August — Sydney LoTs Bus Tour
Hop on a minibus with your new LoTs mates and come explore some amazing sharing spaces across Sydney. You'll visit Inner West Tool Library and the Sydney Library of Things in Lane Cove to see how these spaces operate and connect with the local communities behind them.

🎟️ Tickets
They have bundled all three events together for $185, but because you’re an early bird, you can grab the full summit pass for just $170 using the code EARLYBIRD2026. Link to tickets is here> https://shorturl.at/Ygapf

The code is valid until the end of May, so now’s the perfect time to lock it in.

Can’t make every event? No worries! The code also works for Workshops + LoTFEST tickets, so you can still score the early bird discount.

I can’t wait to see everyone together for a couple of inspiring, energising, and seriously fun days celebrating the sharing movement.

I’d love to encourage anyone with a reuse case study, pilot, or data to contribute to the growing resource library being created by Upstream Solutions. The more knowledge and data shared, the easier it will be to grow the reuse movement.

I LOVED reading about Darebin’s Party Kits in the latest Party Kit Network newsletter. Jo and Jackie are assets to their community and have done so much to reduce waste through different endeavours. I’ve been big fans of their commitment for years.
